“Melodi” Moment Returns as PM Modi Gifts Toffees to Giorgia Meloni in Rome

Rome, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday brought back the popular “#Melodi” social media trend during his visit to Italy, as he presented a light-hearted and unexpected gift—a packet of “Melody” toffees—to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, prompting laughter and warmth between the two leaders.

The informal exchange, marked by visible camaraderie, quickly became a highlight of the visit and was later shared by Meloni on Instagram. Posting the video of the moment, she wrote, “Prime Minister Modi brought us a gift — a very, very good toffee — Melody,” while also adding a note of appreciation: “Thank you for the gift.”

The brief but cheerful interaction once again revived the “Melodi” phenomenon, a social media portmanteau combining the names of Narendra Modi and Giorgia Meloni. Over time, the hashtag has evolved into a viral symbol of the friendly rapport between the two leaders, frequently resurfacing during their international meetings and public appearances.

The term first gained widespread traction after Meloni posted a selfie with PM Modi during the COP28 summit in Dubai, captioned “Good friends at COP28, #Melodi.” What began as a meme among internet users soon transformed into a recurring online trend, often used to highlight their warm exchanges on global platforms.

Since then, every interaction between the two leaders has drawn significant attention on social media, with users sharing memes, clips, and comments celebrating their friendly chemistry. Their repeated appearances together have often gone viral, including handshakes, selfies, and brief conversations at major international summits such as the G20 meeting in New Delhi.

Earlier in the day in Rome, several visuals of PM Modi and Giorgia Meloni together also circulated widely online. At a private dinner near the historic Colosseum, the two leaders were seen engaging in relaxed conversation and sharing light moments. A selfie of the leaders smiling together further added to the social media buzz.

In another widely shared image, Modi and Meloni were seen standing on a balcony overlooking the sunset in Rome, adding to the series of informal and friendly interactions that have defined their public engagements. The moments reflected a personal rapport that has often complemented formal diplomatic discussions between India and Italy.

The recurring “Melodi” trend has increasingly become a symbol of people-to-people engagement and soft diplomacy, reflecting how modern political interactions often extend beyond official meetings into social media narratives.

PM Modi is in Italy as part of his broader international tour, during which he is expected to hold key bilateral discussions aimed at strengthening India–Italy strategic ties across trade, investment, defence, and cultural cooperation.
