Hamas Confirms Death of Gaza Military Chief Mohammad Sinwar, Months After Israeli Strike
Jerusalem, Aug 2025 : The Palestinian militant group Hamas has officially confirmed the death of its Gaza military commander, Mohammad Sinwar, months after Israel claimed to have killed him in a targeted strike.
Hamas acknowledged Sinwar’s death by releasing images of him alongside other slain leaders, honoring him as a “martyr.” However, the group refrained from disclosing specific details about when or how he was killed.
The confirmation comes more than three months after Israel’s announcement in May that Sinwar had been eliminated during a precision strike in southern Gaza. According to Israeli officials, bunker-busting munitions were used to destroy underground hideouts near the European Hospital, where Sinwar was believed to be sheltering.
With Sinwar’s death, leadership of Hamas’ armed wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, is expected to pass to Izz al-Din Haddad, who currently oversees northern Gaza operations.
A Legacy of Militancy
Mohammad Sinwar, younger brother of former Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, had risen through the organization’s ranks over decades. Yahya Sinwar, one of the architects of the October 7 attacks on southern Israel, was himself killed in 2024 during an Israeli operation. His death elevated Mohammad’s prominence within Hamas leadership.
Mohammad Sinwar became the seventh commander of the al-Qassam Brigades in July 2024 and was widely regarded as a key strategist. His militant involvement stretched back years, most notably his role in the 2006 abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. The incident eventually led to Shalit’s release in 2011, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners—including Yahya Sinwar.
Surviving Assassination Attempts
Over the years, Sinwar survived numerous Israeli assassination attempts. He was first targeted during the Second Intifada in 2000, followed by further strikes in 2006 and 2008. During the 2014 Gaza conflict, Hamas even faked his death to conceal his movements, leading Israeli intelligence to mistakenly believe he had been killed until later evidence disproved it.
Israeli Reaction
Following the May operation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Sinwar’s elimination alongside that of other high-profile militants. “We eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists, Mohammad Deif, Hassan Nasrallah, Yahya Sinwar,” Netanyahu said.
Sinwar’s death marks another significant blow to Hamas’ leadership structure, though questions remain over how the group will reorganize its military command as the conflict with Israel continues.
