German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul Begins Two-Day India Visit, Focus on Strategic Ties

Sept 2025 : German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Bengaluru on Tuesday morning to begin a two-day official visit to India, underlining the rising strategic weight of Indo-German relations. This marks his first visit to India in his current role.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the visit, scheduled from September 2 to 3, stressing the strong and evolving partnership between the two democracies. Ahead of his departure, Wadephul described India as a “key partner in the Indo-Pacific,” noting that ties between the two nations span political, economic, and cultural domains.

“There is significant scope to expand our strategic cooperation—from security and technology to innovation and skilled workforce recruitment,” he stated.

Wadephul began his tour in Bengaluru with a visit to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters, underscoring Germany’s growing interest in space collaboration with India. Later in the day, he is scheduled to travel to New Delhi, where he will hold high-level talks on Wednesday.

Key meetings include discussions with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The agenda is expected to cover trade and investment, green energy, digital transformation, security, and global governance issues.

Wadephul also highlighted the shared democratic values that anchor the bilateral relationship, stressing the importance of cooperation among like-minded nations to uphold international peace and stability. “India’s voice, as the world’s most populous country and largest democracy, is increasingly influential on global platforms,” he remarked.

The visit follows Dr. Jaishankar’s trip to Berlin in May 2025, where both leaders engaged in comprehensive talks across the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation, reinforcing momentum in Indo-German strategic ties.
