Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin Unveils Periyar Portrait at Oxford to Mark Self-Respect Movement Centenary
London, Sept 2025 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday unveiled a portrait of social reformer and Dravidian ideology icon E.V. Ramasamy Periyar at Oxford University, commemorating the centenary of the Self-Respect Movement. Mr. Stalin described the event as a proud moment, emphasizing that Periyar’s ideas on equality, rationalism, women’s rights, and social justice have transcended Tamil Nadu and gained global recognition. “Oppression is my enemy – this call of Periyar is now resonating in Oxford as well,” he said, adding that Periyar’s principles are universal and relevant for all humanity.

The portrait, created by renowned art director Thotta Tharani, was unveiled in the presence of scholars, students, and Tamil Nadu Industry Minister T.R.B. Raja. During the event, the Chief Minister also released two books chronicling the century-long journey of the Self-Respect Movement. He underlined that Periyar’s philosophy continues to inspire global movements against caste discrimination and gender inequality. “At Oxford, I spoke with pride as an inheritor of Periyar’s legacy, honouring the revolution that transformed centuries of oppression into an eternal anthem of self-respect,” Mr. Stalin said.
Political analysts viewed the event as a symbolic recognition of Periyar’s global influence. The unveiling not only elevated his legacy on the international stage but also strengthened Tamil Nadu’s cultural presence abroad, showcasing the state’s historical commitment to social justice and reform.
The Oxford event was part of Chief Minister Stalin’s ongoing European investment and engagement tour. Earlier in Germany, he signed 26 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth over ₹7,000 crore. In London, he secured additional investments from Rolls Royce and other leading companies in sectors such as defence, renewable energy, and shipbuilding.
By connecting Periyar’s centenary celebration with international educational and investment platforms, the Chief Minister highlighted Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural heritage while promoting its economic and social agenda on the global stage.
