Making ‘GauShalas’ Self-Reliant is Essential: Chief Minister Dr. Yadav

Bhopal, Sept 2025 : Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has stated that self-reliant ‘Gaushalas’(cow shelters) can play a significant role in strengthening the state’s economy. He emphasised that ‘Gaushalas’ can become prosperous by generating income from cow dung, cow urine and other by-products. To develop self-sufficient ‘Gaushalas’, arrangements should be made for marketing dairy products as well as items manufactured from dung and urine. CM Dr. Yadav also suggested utilising available space in ‘Gaushalas’ for solar power generation. The Chief Minister directed that indigenous ‘Gaupalan’ be promoted in different regions of the state according to local conditions. Religious institutions and donors should also be involved in the management of ‘Gaushalas’. He said that the number of veterinary doctors in the state is inadequate compared to the livestock population, and therefore, steps must be taken to increase their numbers to ensure better cattle management and higher milk production.

CM Dr. Yadav issued these directives while presiding over the meeting of the Madhya Pradesh Cow Conservation Board held at Mantralaya on Monday. Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Shri Lakhan Patel, Chief Secretary Shri Anurag Jain and other officials were present.

Chief Minister Dr. Yadav said that, aligned with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision, indigenous Cow breeds such as Gir, Sahiwal, Malvi and Nagauri should be promoted. Necessary innovations should also be introduced to expand cattle-rearing activities in tribal areas. He stated that integrated efforts in animal husbandry, agriculture, horticulture and renewable energy would not only increase farmers’ incomes but also help Madhya Pradesh emerge as one of the leading states in the country in milk production.

The Gau Samvardhan Board is directly transferring funds to the bank accounts of cow shelter committees at the state level.  After the establishment of 937 new ‘Gaushalas’, registration has been completed, providing shelter to 1.10 lakh cattle. In 2024-25, biogas-cum-organic fertiliser plants were set up in Vidisha, Dewas, Agar-Malwa, Gwalior, Damoh, Satna and Rewa. Municipal Corporations of Gwalior, Indore and Ujjain have started managing large ‘Gaushalas’, while the establishment of ‘Gaushalas’, is underway in Bhopal and Jabalpur. The progress of the policy for setting up self-reliant ‘Gaushalas’ was also reviewed in the meeting.
