Higher & Technical Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana Graces Lunglei Government College Diamond Jubilee Celebration
Lunglei, Sept 2025: Lunglei Government College (LGC) today held a special programme at its College Auditorium to mark the Diamond Jubilee Celebration, commemorating 60 years since its establishment. Dr. Vanlalthlana, Minister of Higher & Technical Education (H&TE), was the chief guest, while Pu V. Malsawmtluanga, Vice Chairman of the Lunglei High Powered Committee (HPC) and MLA of Lunglei North, was the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Vanlalthlana expressed delight that despite many schools and colleges being established over the years, LGC had successfully reached its Diamond Jubilee milestone and achieved B+ accreditation. He emphasized the need for institutions in the southern region of Mizoram to continue striving for excellence and innovation, and highlighted the Government’s commitment to supporting education.
The Minister announced that from the ₹100 crore recently allocated to Mizoram by the Central Government, substantial development projects have been earmarked for Lunglei. Plans include strengthening the infrastructure of both Lunglei Government College and Government J. Buana College, construction of a new girls’ hostel for LGC, upgrading the administrative block, improving the library approach road, repairing sanitation facilities, and procuring essential teaching and learning resources. He further mentioned that the Mizoram Engineering College project is progressing with significant Government funding, and that steps are being taken to enhance Mizoram Polytechnic Lunglei as well.
Dr. Vanlalthlana urged students to value discipline and perseverance, stressing that success cannot come through shortcuts or half-hearted efforts. He encouraged them to make full use of the academic resources and modern facilities available, including the Entrepreneurship Knowledge Cell (EKC), which trains students in self-reliance, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Guest of Honour Pu V. Malsawmtluanga donated ₹1 lakh to the LGC Students’ Union for the purchase of jerseys for their volleyball tournament. He praised the college for its achievements and contributions to Mizoram’s educational landscape, reminding students that LGC has produced many distinguished alumni who excel in various professions. He also assured that funds have already been sanctioned for repairing the basketball court and internal campus roads under the Lunglei HPC initiatives.
The event was chaired by Pu C. Lalremchhunga, Vice Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee, while Principal Pu Lalrammuana Chawngthu delivered the welcome address. A souvenir commemorating the jubilee was released by Rev. Dr. C.L. Hminga (97 years old), the first Principal of the college (1964–67). The programme featured cultural performances by the Voices of LGC choir, the LGC Cultural Club, and student artistes. Associate Professor Pu R. Lalrochama delivered the vote of thanks.
The celebration was attended by dignitaries including Pu Lalramliana Papuia, MLA of Lunglei South; Pu T. Lalhlimpuia, MLA of Lunglei West; Pu Lalzuithanga, Chairman of Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), along with councillors; Pi R. Lalmuankimi, Additional Secretary, H&TE; Dr. C. Zarzoliana, Additional State Project Director (RUSA); officials from various Government departments; heads of institutions; alumni; MJA members; and students.
The event concluded with a festive Diamond Jubilee feast.
Background:
Lunglei Government College was founded on September 10, 1963 by a group of visionary citizens under the name Lunglei College. It was initially established without formal affiliation, and the first Principal was Rev. Dr. C.L. Hminga, a Baptist pastor, who later secured recognition from Gauhati University. The college formally came into being on September 10, 1964.
At present (academic year 2025–2026), LGC offers Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) courses with 14 departments, and has around 845 students. The teaching faculty comprises 47 regular lecturers along with several casual teachers and non-teaching staff. Since its founding, the college has been served by 23 Principals
