Neeraj Chopra–Arshad Nadeem Rivalry Set for Blockbuster Clash in Javelin World Championship Final
Tokyo, Sept 2025 : The much-anticipated rivalry between India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem will once again take centre stage on Thursday as the two Olympic and World champions lock horns in the men’s javelin final at the World Athletics Championships.
Chopra, who breached the 90-metre barrier earlier this season, is chasing history as he aims to defend the world crown he won in Budapest in 2023. On Wednesday, the 27-year-old made qualification look routine, sealing his spot with just one throw. His effort of 84.85m comfortably crossed the automatic qualification mark of 84.50m, underlining both his form and intent.
This was the fifth straight time Chopra has needed only one attempt to progress to the final — a record stretching back to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Germany’s Julian Weber was the next to qualify, making the cut on his second throw. After opening with 82.29m, he launched a powerful 87.21m effort to secure his place. Also advancing were Chopra’s compatriot Sachin Yadav, who scraped through after a nervous wait, and reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, who left it late but booked his ticket with his final attempt.
The Chopra-Nadeem rivalry has become one of the most gripping storylines in global athletics. Chopra claimed gold at the 2023 World Championships with 88.17m, edging past Nadeem’s 87.82m silver. However, the tables turned at the 2024 Paris Olympics, when Nadeem stunned the field with a gigantic 92.97m throw, dethroning Chopra, who settled for silver with 89.45m.
Now, in Tokyo, the two South Asian stars are poised for another chapter in their gripping saga. For Chopra, a successful defense would cement his legacy as one of India’s greatest athletes. For Nadeem, it is an opportunity to reaffirm his Olympic supremacy.
The 12-man final also features formidable names, including former world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, Kenya’s veteran Julius Yego, and Germany’s Weber, all capable of producing big throws. Yet, the global spotlight will inevitably be on the Chopra–Nadeem showdown, a rivalry that transcends sport and has come to symbolize South Asia’s rise on the world athletics stage.
