Mahasamund District Achieves National Recognition : First Place in Water Conservation Public Participation Campaign

Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai congratulates, says – “Only through public participation can water conservation become a people’s movement”

Raipur, Sept 2025 : Adding another golden chapter in the direction of water conservation, Mahasamund district has achieved a remarkable accomplishment at the national level. Under the Water Conservation Public Participation Campaign 2.0, the district has secured first place in Zone-2, Category-2 across the country. For this achievement, the Government of India will present Mahasamund district administration with a cash award of ₹1 crore.

Chief Minister Shri Vishnudev Sai, extending heartfelt congratulations to the citizens, administration, and public representatives of Mahasamund district on this success, said, “Water is the foundation of life. In line with the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, we in Chhattisgarh are also making water conservation a people’s movement based on public participation. Mahasamund has proved, through community spirit and innovation, that no matter how big the goal, it can be achieved when people come forward and participate.” The Chief Minister added that the State Government, giving top priority to water conservation, will implement people-oriented schemes like Mor Gaon-Mor Pani (My Village–My Water) even more effectively in villages.

In Mahasamund district, this campaign has taken the form of a people’s movement. Under the Mor Gaon-Mor Pani campaign, techniques like soak pits, rooftop harvesting, intake well recharge, and other methods are being adopted to promote rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.

Through public participation, 35,182 water structures, 5,000 soak pits, 125 injection wells, 1,839 soak pits, and 25 borewell recharge systems have been created in the district. Additionally, 785 water conservation works have been completed across various Janpad Panchayats. These efforts have enabled maximum conservation of rainwater and significant recharge of groundwater.

Through this campaign, all five Janpad Panchayats of the district—Mahasamund, Bagbahara, Pithora, Basna, and Saraipali—have taken concrete steps towards rainwater harvesting. As a result, there will be an increase in groundwater levels along with long-term benefits for irrigation and drinking water availability for rural communities.
