New York, Sept 2025 : External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Saturday underscored the urgent need to reform the United Nations, calling for the expansion of both permanent and non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council (UNSC). Speaking at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, he stressed that India stands ready to shoulder greater global responsibilities.
Highlighting what he described as the “deterioration in the credibility of the United Nations,” Jaishankar pointed to resistance to reforms as the root cause. “Most members strongly desire change; but this process is being hindered by entrenched resistance. It is important that we acknowledge this pessimism and focus purposefully on the reform agenda. The historical injustice done to Africa must be redressed. Both permanent and non-permanent membership of the Council should be expanded,” he said.
Calling for a “truly representative” Council, the minister declared: “India is ready to take on greater responsibilities.”
Jaishankar also showcased India’s track record of supporting its neighbors in times of crisis. “In turbulent times, it is essential that we rise to the occasion. India has been at the forefront in this regard, especially in our immediate region. Whether it is finance, food, fertilizer, or fuel, we have met the urgent needs of our neighbors,” he said.
Turning to the global security landscape, the EAM highlighted the wide-reaching impact of ongoing conflicts, particularly in Ukraine and Gaza. “These conflicts have had consequences even for countries not directly involved. Nations that can engage all parties should step forward to find solutions. India calls for an immediate end to hostilities and will support any initiative that helps restore peace,” he affirmed.
On development and technology, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to sharing knowledge and innovation with other nations. He pointed to artificial intelligence as a transformative tool for global progress. “India is committed to sharing its experiences and tools with others in their journey to development. Artificial intelligence, as a horizontal and cross-cutting technology, is particularly promising. India’s vision is to use it responsibly for human well-being. Inclusivity and impact will be the guiding principles of the AI summit hosted by India in 2026,” he announced.
As debates on multilateral reform intensify, Jaishankar’s speech reiterated India’s long-standing demand for UNSC reform and positioned the country as a proactive partner in peacebuilding, crisis response, and responsible technological advancement.
