Consumer Affairs Department Cracks Down on Trade Irregularities Ahead of Festive Season — ₹1.77 Lakh Fine Imposed on 14 Establishments in Jaipur

Jaipur, Oct 2025 — To protect consumer interests during the Diwali festive season, the Department of Consumer Affairs has launched an intensive inspection drive across the state against traders violating rules related to weights and measurement instruments. Departmental officers are inspecting shops and taking strict action against those not adhering to prescribed regulations.

Under the direction of the Additional Commissioner, Food Department and Ex-Officio Controller, Legal Metrology, surprise inspections were carried out on Thursday at 14 business establishments located in Dinanath Ji Ki Gali, Jaipur, under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011. During the inspections, it was found that several establishments lacked verified weighing scales and standard weights, and some were using unauthorized or misleading packaging. Cases were registered, and a total fine of ₹1,77,000 was imposed and deposited into the state treasury.

When some inspection teams faced obstruction from local traders attempting to disrupt enforcement activities, assistance was sought from local police to ensure the continuation of proceedings. In the presence of office bearers from local trade associations, all traders were instructed to strictly comply with the Legal Metrology Act and Packaged Commodities Rules.

It is noteworthy that this special campaign against irregularities in weights, measures, and packaging standards will be conducted across the state from October 13 to 19. Special teams have been formed at both the divisional and district levels to oversee the drive. The aim of the campaign is to ensure that traders use accurate weights and measures in the interest of consumers, ensuring a safe, reliable, and satisfactory shopping experience.

Additionally, the campaign seeks to raise consumer awareness about their rights. Every consumer has the legal right to purity, standardization, quantity, and accurate measurement of the goods and services they purchase. In case of violations, consumers can file complaints with the Department of Consumer Affairs through the State Consumer Helpline Numbers 1800-180-6030 and 14435, or via WhatsApp at 72300-86030. The helpline also provides consultation, advice, and guidance to consumers.
