Lunglei District Prepares for Sub-National Immunisation Day to Administer Polio Vaccine

Lunglei, Oct, 2025: The Lunglei District Task Force on Immunisation (DTFI) convened a meeting at the Lunglei DC Conference Hall under the chairmanship of Lunglei District Deputy Commissioner Pi Navneet Mann. The meeting focused on the upcoming Sub-National Immunisation Day (SNID) scheduled for October 14, 2025, aimed at administering the polio vaccine across the district.

During the meeting, DTFI Secretary and Lunglei District Immunisation Officer Dr. Christina Zonunmawii outlined the SNID operational plan and strategies for ensuring full participation in Lunglei District. She also discussed the preparation and logistical arrangements required for the smooth administration of the vaccine.

The SNID campaign in India will cover multiple health districts in Mizoram, including Champhai (Champhai and Khawzawl districts), Lunglei (Lunglei and Hnahthial districts), Lawngtlai, and Siaha districts. During the campaign, children under the age of 5 will be administered two doses of the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV).

In Lunglei District, 12,028 children are targeted to receive the polio vaccine. On October 14, 2025, a total of 157 vaccination booths and 3 transit points will be operational to deliver the vaccine. Children who miss vaccination on the primary day will be covered on October 15 and 16, with health & wellness officers, health workers, ASHA, and Anganwadi workers conducting follow-up visits to ensure complete coverage.

The SNID campaign in Lunglei is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM on October 14, 2025, and is expected to mobilize resources across 157 booths, with 59 booths in remote areas. Parents and guardians are urged to ensure that their children receive the vaccine to maintain community protection against polio. The DTFI emphasized the critical role of mothers and caregivers in achieving full vaccination coverage.

It is noteworthy that India was declared polio-free by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 27, 2014, following the last reported case on January 11, 2011. Despite being polio-free, the vaccination drive continues to prevent any possible re-emergence. Routine sampling and monitoring are conducted between April and August each year, and no polio cases have been detected during these checks.

This SNID initiative ensures that Lunglei District continues to uphold its commitment to public health and polio eradication.
