Mumbai, Oct 2025 : The Maharashtra Government has announced that October 15, the birth anniversary of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will be celebrated as ‘Reading Inspiration Day’ to promote the culture of reading and encourage the propagation, preservation, and enrichment of the Marathi language.

This year’s theme for the celebration is “Let’s Take a Pledge — Make Marathi a Language of Knowledge.”

All government and semi-government departments, institutions, boards, public undertakings, commissioners’ offices, and district collectorates across the state have been directed to organize various programs to celebrate Reading Inspiration Day. These events will be held both online and offline.

The celebrations will not be confined to literary works alone but will also include subjects such as science, technology, management, environment, health, computers, and space science. To engage the youth, career-oriented activities will also be conducted. Workshops will be organized on topics such as translation writing, professional writing, e-books, self-publishing, online book sales, scriptwriting, and short film/documentary writing.

In addition, lectures, discussions, recitations, collective reading sessions, book exhibitions, creation of ‘Marathi Reading Corners’, and organization of virtual or in-person Marathi literary conferences will be held. Programs will also be arranged to raise awareness about the increased use of the Marathi language in judiciary, government administration, and the media.

To facilitate these events, the government will collaborate with literary organizations such as the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, Marathwada Sahitya Parishad, Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh, Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad, South Maharashtra Sahitya Sabha, and the Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh.

Events will also be organized in libraries, colleges, technical institutes, and diploma institutions. Educational bodies under the School Education Department will conduct activities to strengthen the reading culture, while institutions under municipal corporations and councils will also take part in the celebrations, said Dr. Kiran Kulkarni, Secretary, Marathi Language Department.
