Chhattisgarh Tomatoes Reach Kitchens of Maharashtra
Raipur, Oct 2025: Tomatoes grown in Chhattisgarh have now made their way to kitchens in Maharashtra.
Several farming families in Chhattisgarh have achieved self-reliance through tomato cultivation, with some turning it into a profitable business. When high-quality varieties and modern techniques are adopted, tomato farming can provide a good income and financial stability for families. Among the inspiring women in this field is Mrs. Jayvati from Baswahi village in the Sonhat development block of Korea district. Through hard work and confidence, she has carved a name for herself. Mrs. Jayvati shared, “I never imagined that tomatoes grown on the soil of Korea would reach Maharashtra, but it has become a reality.”

Mrs. Jayvati is associated with the ‘Chameli Self-Help Group’ and, along with her husband Mr. Gopal Cherwa, cultivates tomatoes on three acres of land. Her husband supports her not only in rice cultivation but also in other agricultural activities. She explains that due to the excellent yield of tomatoes, their produce now reaches markets from Bilaspur and Raipur all the way to Maharashtra. With an annual income of around ₹3 lakh, the family’s economic condition has seen significant improvement.
Economic Empowerment Through Self-Help Groups
Mrs. Jayvati has two children—her daughter studies in sixth grade, and her son in twelfth grade. She is now fully committed to supporting their higher education.
Women like Mrs. Jayvati are not only becoming economically empowered through self-help groups but are also emerging as sources of inspiration for their families and communities.
