Delhi CM Rekha Gupta hails Supreme Court’s ‘Balanced’ nod on green firecrackers
New Delhi, Oct 2025 : Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Supreme Court of India for allowing the limited use of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR during the Diwali festival. She said the decision reflects a deep understanding of the nation’s cultural sensitivities and public sentiments, maintaining a fine balance between tradition and environmental protection.
The Chief Minister said that Diwali, in Indian culture is a festival symbolising light, knowledge, and auspiciousness. It is not merely a celebration of lamps but a festival that embodies joy, unity, and hope in social and family life. Fireworks associated with Diwali have, for centuries, been an expression of people’s emotions and cultural heritage. The Supreme Court’s verdict, she said, respects these sentiments while reinforcing the collective responsibility towards the environment.
She informed that the Delhi Government had specifically appealed to the Supreme Court to permit the use of green firecrackers in the capital so that Diwali traditions could be honoured while ensuring environmental safety. She expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Delhi for the Court’s considerate decision, which takes into account public emotions and cultural values.
The Chief Minister further said that the Delhi Government remains fully committed to its vision of a cleaner and greener capital. The government’s objective, she noted, is to ensure that the festive spirit continues while keeping pollution under control. She appealed to citizens to use only certified green firecrackers this Diwali and to follow all prescribed guidelines so that celebrations remain joyful without compromising air quality.
Calling the Supreme Court’s verdict a “historic step towards harmonising tradition and environmental preservation,” she said that, for the first time in years, Delhi residents will be able to celebrate Diwali with officially permitted fireworks. “This decision not only honours public sentiment but also sends out a powerful message of environmental responsibility,” she added.
The Chief Minister noted that Delhi’s air quality has improved compared to previous years and that efforts to curb pollution are being continuously strengthened. She assured that all systems related to air quality monitoring, traffic management, and enforcement would remain fully active during Diwali to ensure a clean and safe environment.
She remarked that the Supreme Court’s decision is not only a relief for the people of Delhi but also a positive message for the entire nation that development, tradition, and environmental protection can move forward together. “Together, we shall make this Diwali green and glorious,” she said. “This will not merely be a celebration, but a reflection of our cultural consciousness and collective responsibility.”
The Chief Minister concluded by saying that the verdict has brought happiness to every household while opening a new chapter in environmental awareness. She urged Delhi’s citizens to embrace nature’s serenity amid the festive sparkle and to join in building a greener and happier Delhi.
