Amit Shah Says ‘Vande Mataram’ Is the “Voice of India’s Soul” on Its 150th Anniversary
New Delhi, Nov 2025 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday described the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ as the “voice of India’s soul,” urging citizens to honour its historic legacy as the iconic anthem completes 150 years. In a post on X, Shah said the song played a decisive role in uniting Indians during the freedom struggle and continues to inspire new generations.
Shah wrote that ‘Vande Mataram’ was far more than a phrase or slogan—it was a spiritual force that awakened national consciousness during the fight against British rule. “Vande Mataram is not merely a collection of words; it is the voice of India’s soul. Against the English regime, ‘Vande Mataram’ united the nation and strengthened the consciousness of freedom. At the same time, it awakened in the revolutionaries an unwavering dedication, pride, and spirit of sacrifice for the motherland,” he said in his post, originally written in Hindi.
According to the Home Minister, the national song continues to kindle a strong sense of patriotism. He said its emotional power remains as relevant today as it was during the Independence movement. “Vande Mataram continues to ignite the eternal flame of nationalism in the hearts of the countrymen and remains a source of unity, patriotism, and renewed energy among the youth even today,” he added. Shah noted that the song completing 150 years is an occasion for every citizen to reflect on the values it represents.
Calling on people to celebrate the milestone, Shah encouraged families across India to come together and sing the full version of the national song. Such collective participation, he said, would help ensure that its message continues to inspire future generations. “Let us, on the occasion of commemorating this great song, collectively sing its full version with our family members, so that this song remains a centre of inspiration for future generations. Vande Mataram!” Shah wrote.
The 150th anniversary has prompted several commemorative events across the national capital. The Delhi Assembly on Friday hosted a grand celebration to honour the song’s historical, cultural, and emotional significance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to participate in a special event later in the day to mark the anniversary, underscoring the enduring respect and national pride associated with ‘Vande Mataram’, which once served as a rallying cry for India’s struggle for Independence.
