Maharashtra to Build Memorial at Agra Site Where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Was Held — Minister Jaykumar Rawal Appointed as Coordinator

Mumbai, Nov 2025 : The Maharashtra government will acquire the site in Agra where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was once held under house arrest and build a memorial there. Minister for Protocol and Marketing Jaykumar Rawal has been appointed as the coordinator to liaise with the Government of Uttar Pradesh for acquiring the site and completing related formalities.

During an event in Agra marking 395 years of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s birth anniversary, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that a grand memorial would be built at the historical site where the Maratha warrior king had been detained. He also stated that the required funds for the project would be allocated in the upcoming state budget.

The Tourism Department has been designated as the nodal department for the construction of this memorial. Minister Jaykumar Rawal will coordinate with the Uttar Pradesh government to facilitate the acquisition of the land and oversee related administrative procedures.

The period Shivaji Maharaj spent in Agra marks a significant chapter in the history of Swarajya (self-rule). The proposed memorial aims to preserve and honour this historic legacy for future generations.
