Promote Reading, Not Just Bouquets: CM Dhami Appeals to Support Books and Local Languages
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has urged citizens to promote the habit of reading, saying, “Give books, not bouquets.” Speaking at the release of senior journalist Jai Singh Rawat’s book “The Modern Political History of Uttarakhand”, CM Dhami emphasized that no matter how advanced artificial intelligence becomes, books have no substitute.
The book provides a comprehensive, factual account of Uttarakhand’s 25-year political journey since its formation, presenting detailed documentation and analysis across five sections, making it particularly useful for researchers, students, and young professionals preparing for administrative services. The CM praised Rawat for compiling this history with authenticity and coherence, highlighting rare documents and press clippings.
CM Dhami stressed that reading books deepens understanding and preserves knowledge in ways that instant internet information cannot. He appealed to everyone to encourage book-giving in events to foster interest in literature and motivate authors.
Highlighting the importance of preserving regional languages, CM Dhami said the government is prioritizing the protection and digitalization of Garhwali, Kumaoni, Jaunsari, and other local dialects. He urged students and communities to use their mother tongues at home, in schools, and in cultural activities, connecting the younger generation with their heritage.
He stated that language, culture, and traditions are not just means of expression but form the foundation of identity and legacy. Preserving them instills pride and strengthens cultural awareness among the youth. The government is also promoting competitions and initiatives to encourage content creation, writing, songs, and research in local languages.
CM Dhami concluded that digital platforms will help safeguard mother tongues, making them more accessible and robust for future generations, while simultaneously strengthening literary and folk traditions.
The event was attended by former CM and Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, former CM Harish Rawat, MLA Brij Bhushan Gairola, journalists, writers, and other dignitaries.
