Morocco Outclass Canada 3-0 to Storm into FIFA World Cup Quarter-finals
Houston, July 2026 : Morocco delivered a dominant second-half performance to defeat co-hosts Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, ending the hosts’ dream run and securing a place in the quarter-finals. Despite a spirited opening from Canada, the African side capitalised on their chances after the break, with Azzedine Ounahi scoring twice before Soufiane Rahimi sealed the emphatic victory in stoppage time.
Score: Morocco 3 (Azzedine Ounahi 50′, 82′, Soufiane Rahimi 90+’) beat Canada 0.
Canada started brightly in front of a passionate home crowd in Houston, putting Morocco under sustained pressure during the opening exchanges. The hosts created several promising opportunities and looked the more dangerous side in the first 15 minutes.
Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved to be the difference early on, producing two crucial one-on-one saves to deny Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi within the first 11 minutes. His timely interventions kept the North Africans level as Canada searched desperately for an early breakthrough.
The intensity of the contest continued to rise as the first half progressed, with the physical battle resulting in seven yellow cards being shown by the referee. Tempers briefly flared in the 40th minute when Moroccan captain Achraf Hakimi shoved Canada’s Richie Laryea following a chase for a long ball, adding further drama to an already fiercely contested encounter.
Despite Canada’s attacking intent, neither side managed to find the net before halftime, leaving the match delicately poised at 0-0.
Morocco emerged after the interval with renewed purpose and a more aggressive approach. Their tactical adjustments paid immediate dividends as they broke the deadlock in the 50th minute.
From a well-worked free-kick routine, Hakimi cleverly squared the ball to Azzedine Ounahi, who found himself with ample space on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder calmly guided a precise low finish beyond goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to hand Morocco a crucial 1-0 lead.
Canada responded by committing more players forward in search of an equaliser, but Morocco’s disciplined defence stood firm under pressure. Although the hosts enjoyed significant possession in dangerous areas and registered an impressive 30 touches inside the Moroccan penalty area, they struggled to convert that dominance into meaningful chances. After the opening 11 minutes, Canada managed only one shot on target despite their relentless attacking efforts.
As Canada pushed higher up the pitch, Morocco exploited the spaces left behind with swift counter-attacks. Their patience was rewarded in the 82nd minute when Ounahi struck again. A rapid break caught the Canadian defence out of position, allowing the midfielder to finish confidently and complete his brace, effectively ending the contest.
The African side added further gloss to the scoreline deep into stoppage time. Soufiane Rahimi, who had earlier seen a looping header strike the crossbar, raced through on goal before calmly dribbling around Crépeau and slotting home Morocco’s third goal.
The victory sends Morocco into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winners of the Round of 16 clash between Paraguay and France.
For Canada, the defeat brings an end to a memorable World Cup campaign. The co-hosts recorded several historic milestones during the tournament, including their first-ever World Cup point, maiden victory, progression beyond the group stage, and a first knockout-stage triumph. Canada were also without injured captain Alphonso Davies, who continued his recovery from a hamstring injury and was absent for the match.
