Sinner Cruises into Fifth Straight Wimbledon Quarter-final

London, July 2026 : World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continued his commanding run at Wimbledon 2026, brushing aside Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3, 7-6(0), 6-3 to secure a place in the quarter-finals for the fifth consecutive year. The defending champion delivered another composed performance on Centre Court, overcoming a spirited challenge to remain firmly on course for back-to-back Wimbledon titles.

With the victory, Sinner joined an elite group of players in the Open Era to reach five successive Wimbledon quarter-finals. He also became only the second active men’s player, after seven-time champion Novak Djokovic, to achieve the feat, underlining his remarkable consistency on grass.

Although the straight-sets scoreline suggested a routine afternoon, Mochizuki proved a tricky opponent for long stretches of the contest. The Japanese qualifier, enjoying the best Grand Slam run of his career, showcased excellent variety and movement, particularly in the second set, forcing Sinner to work hard for every point.

Mochizuki created the first break opportunity of the match, but Sinner responded immediately with confident serving and aggressive baseline play. The Italian soon found his rhythm, breaking serve before comfortably closing out the opening set in just over half an hour.

The second set was far more competitive. Mochizuki protected his serve impressively in the early stages, refusing to concede a single point in his opening three service games. His clever shot selection and well-disguised backhand repeatedly disrupted Sinner’s rhythm, while the Italian struggled to dominate the longer rallies.

Sinner finally began applying sustained pressure midway through the set, earning three break points during a marathon service game that featured seven deuces. However, Mochizuki held firm, frustrating the top seed and pushing the contest into a tie-break.

With the Centre Court roof closed because of fading light and changing conditions, Sinner returned from the brief break with renewed intent. He completely dominated the tie-break, racing through it 7-0 as Mochizuki faltered under pressure. That flawless tie-break proved to be the decisive moment of the match.

Holding a two-set advantage, Sinner took full control in the third set. His powerful groundstrokes, precise serving and relentless consistency gradually wore down the qualifier, who could no longer sustain the level that had troubled the defending champion earlier in the contest. Sinner sealed victory with another timely break before serving out the match in style.

After the win, Sinner praised his opponent’s performance and admitted he had needed time to adjust to Mochizuki’s unique style of play.

“It was the first time we played against each other, so I didn’t really know what to expect,” Sinner said after the match. “I tried to manage certain situations a little better than him, and fortunately I was able to do that. He’s an incredible player. Coming through qualifying and maintaining such a high level for so long is really impressive.”

The Italian also acknowledged the challenges posed by Mochizuki’s game on grass.

“It was very tricky because his style suits this surface really well. He stays very low and doesn’t give you much pace to work with. I tried to be more aggressive and create opportunities. I had chances in the second set, couldn’t take them, but overall I’m very pleased with today’s performance.”

Sinner’s victory extends his impressive run at Wimbledon and reinforces his status as the tournament favourite. Having dropped very few sets throughout his title defence, the world No. 1 continues to display the confidence and composure that have made him one of the dominant forces in men’s tennis.

As the tournament enters its decisive stages, Sinner will now shift his focus to the quarter-finals, where he will aim to move one step closer to another Wimbledon crown and continue his outstanding Grand Slam campaign.
