PM Modi Begins Three-Nation Tour to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, Focus on Indo-Pacific Cooperation

New Delhi, July 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday embarked on a significant three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, aiming to deepen India’s strategic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region while reinforcing the country’s Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) Vision.

Before departing, the Prime Minister said the tour would strengthen India’s engagement with key regional partners and reaffirm its commitment to promoting a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

Indonesia Visit to Boost Strategic Partnership

PM Modi’s first stop is Indonesia, where he will stay from July 6 to 8 at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

In his departure statement, the Prime Minister recalled that India and Indonesia elevated their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during his visit to Jakarta in 2018. He noted that this would be his first bilateral visit to Indonesia since that milestone and comes after President Prabowo’s State Visit to India as the Chief Guest for the 2025 Republic Day celebrations.

Highlighting the long-standing civilisational links between the two countries, Modi said the visit would help deepen cooperation across multiple sectors while strengthening cultural and people-to-people relations.

During his stay, the Prime Minister will also interact with members of the Indian diaspora and accompany President Prabowo to the iconic Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta, describing the historic site as a symbol of the deep cultural heritage shared by India and Indonesia.

Australia Visit to Expand Strategic Cooperation

Following his Indonesia visit, PM Modi will travel to Melbourne at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The Prime Minister said discussions with his Australian counterpart would focus on advancing the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with emphasis on defence and security cooperation, trade and investment, education, mobility and stronger people-to-people ties.

He added that the visit would also create fresh opportunities for collaboration in emerging and critical technologies, innovation, sports and sports science, areas that have become increasingly important in bilateral relations.

Modi is also scheduled to address members of the Indian community in Melbourne, describing the diaspora as an important pillar of the growing partnership between the two nations.

New Zealand to Focus on Trade and Economic Engagement

The final leg of the tour will take the Prime Minister to Auckland, where he will hold talks with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

PM Modi said the visit would build upon the momentum generated by Prime Minister Luxon’s visit to India in March this year and focus on expanding economic, trade and commercial cooperation.

He noted that both countries have committed to strengthening bilateral trade following the signing of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to enhance business opportunities and economic engagement.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the contributions of the Indian diaspora in New Zealand, saying the community has played a vital role in strengthening bilateral ties. He expressed his eagerness to address a large gathering of the Indian community during the visit.

Reinforcing India’s Indo-Pacific Vision

Emphasising the broader significance of the three-nation tour, PM Modi said visits to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand would reinforce India’s strategic engagement across the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean region.

He said the tour reflects India’s commitment to the Act East Policy, the MAHASAGAR Vision, and a shared objective of promoting peace, stability, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific through stronger regional partnerships and closer cooperation with like-minded nations.
