Neymar Hints at Brazil Retirement After Painful World Cup Exit to Norway

London, July 2026 : Brazilian superstar Neymar has hinted that his international career may have come to an end following Brazil’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, a result that marked the country’s earliest exit from the tournament since 1990.

The 34-year-old forward scored Brazil’s only goal from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent the five-time world champions from crashing out after Erling Haaland’s late double guided Norway into the quarter-finals.

An emotional Neymar struggled to hold back tears after the final whistle and suggested that the match may have been his last in the famous yellow jersey.

“I tried, I tried… Now it’s over. I started here, I finished here,” Neymar told Brazilian broadcaster ge tv, referring to the stadium in New Jersey where he made his senior debut for Brazil in a friendly against the United States in 2010.

His comments have fuelled speculation that he is preparing to retire from international football, bringing an end to one of the most celebrated careers in Brazilian football history.

If confirmed, Neymar will finish his Brazil career with an outstanding record of 80 goals and 58 assists in 130 international appearances, making him one of the country’s greatest-ever players. While he enjoyed tremendous success at club level with multiple domestic and continental titles, his only major senior trophy with Brazil remains the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Brazil’s latest World Cup disappointment also extends the nation’s long wait for a sixth global title. Since lifting the trophy in 2002, the Selecao have repeatedly fallen short on the biggest stage. If they fail to win the next edition in 2030, it will mark 28 years without a World Cup triumph, their longest drought since becoming world champions for the first time in 1958.

The defeat to Norway has intensified scrutiny over Brazil’s recent performances, despite the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti in a bid to restore the team’s former glory.

Whether Neymar officially confirms his retirement in the coming days remains to be seen, but his emotional farewell message has left fans wondering if one of Brazil’s most iconic football careers has reached its final chapter.
