Bethell, Brook Power England to Thrilling Four-Wicket Win Over India, Take Series Lead
Manchester, July 2026 : England produced a remarkable comeback with the bat as Jacob Bethell’s composed unbeaten 76 and Harry Brook’s explosive counterattack guided the hosts to a four-wicket victory over India in the second T20 International at Old Trafford on Friday. Chasing a challenging target of 191, England reached 191/6 with one over to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after recovering from a disastrous start.
India had earlier posted a competitive 190/7, thanks to valuable contributions from Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma. However, England’s fearless batting approach, led by Brook and Bethell, proved decisive despite spirited bowling efforts from the Indian attack.
The visitors could not have asked for a better beginning with the ball. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh struck with the very first delivery of the innings, dismissing Phil Salt, before removing England captain Jos Buttler for a duck later in the over. Varun Chakaravarthy completed a sharp catch at midwicket as England slumped to 1/2, handing India complete control of the contest.
But the momentum shifted dramatically within minutes. Brook launched one of the most destructive counterattacks seen in recent T20 cricket. After taking Harshit Rana for two boundaries, the England skipper completely dismantled Arshdeep in the third over, smashing three sixes and three fours to collect 27 runs. England raced from 1/2 to 38/2 in just three overs, completely changing the complexion of the chase.
Brook’s whirlwind knock ended on 39 from only 15 deliveries when Axar Patel trapped him after India successfully reviewed the decision. Axar also achieved a personal milestone during the innings by claiming his 100th T20 wicket. Along with Varun Chakaravarthy, he applied the brakes on England’s scoring, allowing India to regain a foothold in the match.
However, Jacob Bethell remained calm under pressure. The young left-hander paced his innings brilliantly, rotating the strike while punishing loose deliveries. Tom Banton supported him with an impressive 39, using innovative strokeplay, including reverse sweeps, to keep the scoreboard moving.
Arshdeep returned to dismiss Banton, while Varun removed Will Jacks shortly afterwards, leaving England needing 49 runs from the final five overs. India sensed an opportunity to force another dramatic finish.
That hope disappeared in the 17th over. Ravi Bishnoi endured a costly spell, bowling two no-balls that resulted in free hits. Bethell made India pay heavily, smashing three towering sixes and a boundary in an over that yielded 29 runs. The over proved to be the turning point of the contest as England regained complete control.
Bethell brought up a superb half-century during his match-winning innings and continued to anchor the chase. Although Harshit Rana dismissed Sam Curran and youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi celebrated his maiden international catch on the boundary, England required only a handful of runs in the closing overs.
Arshdeep briefly delayed the inevitable with another wicket to finish with impressive figures of 3/40, but Bethell remained unbeaten to steer England home comfortably before Jofra Archer completed the chase with two runs off the final delivery of the 19th over.
Earlier, India’s batting effort featured several notable performances. Teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, making history as India’s youngest T20 International debutant, announced himself with two sixes before being stumped for 14. Abhishek Sharma provided early momentum with an aggressive 43 off 24 balls, while Shreyas Iyer added 37 during a crucial partnership with Ishan Kishan.
Kishan anchored the middle overs with a composed 49 before falling just short of a deserved half-century. England’s bowlers, led by Sam Curran, fought back effectively during the middle phase. Curran mixed his pace cleverly to finish with 3/33 and restrict India from posting a total well beyond 200.
Tilak Varma then supplied the late flourish with an unbeaten 24 off only 11 deliveries, including three towering sixes, helping India finish strongly at 190/7.
Despite India’s competitive total and Arshdeep’s outstanding opening spell, England’s aggressive batting philosophy once again came to the fore. Brook’s fearless assault changed the momentum early, while Bethell’s mature and unbeaten innings ensured the hosts completed one of their finest T20 run chases in recent times.
Brief Scores: India 190/7 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 49, Abhishek Sharma 43, Shreyas Iyer 37, Tilak Varma 24*; Sam Curran 3/33) lost to England 191/6 in 19 overs (Jacob Bethell 76*, Harry Brook 39, Tom Banton 39; Arshdeep Singh 3/40) by four wickets.
