Officer Trainees of IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) Call on President Droupadi Murmu
New Delhi, Nov 2025: Officer Trainees of the 76th batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan today.
Addressing the young officers, the President emphasized that revenue collection forms the backbone of nation-building. She noted that the taxes collected by the department fund critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social welfare. By ensuring efficient revenue administration, the officers, she said, become active contributors to India’s developmental journey. She also stressed that tax collection must be carried out smoothly and with minimal inconvenience to taxpayers.
Highlighting the multidimensional nature of their future roles, President Murmu said that Revenue Service officers serve simultaneously as administrators, investigators, trade facilitators, and enforcers of law. They are “sentinels of India’s economic frontiers,” safeguarding the nation from smuggling, financial fraud, and illicit trade, while also enabling legitimate commerce and international trade partnerships.
She reminded the trainees that their responsibilities require maintaining a fine balance—between enforcement and facilitation, and between upholding the law and fostering economic growth. The President urged them to build systems that are transparent, accountable, and driven by modern technology.
Underscoring the values expected from civil servants, she stressed that integrity and fairness must be the foundation of their conduct. She added that the nation looks to young officers to be innovative, analytical, and technologically proficient as they take on key roles in India’s taxation and trade ecosystem.
