Aizawl, Nov 2025: Fisheries Minister Pu Lalthansanga inaugurated a new Cold Storage for Fisheries facility at Ngaizel, Kulikawn today. The Minister attended the inauguration ceremony as the chief guest, formally opening the cold storage unit.
Speaking at the event, Minister Lalthansanga expressed satisfaction that the Fisheries Department had successfully established a cold storage facility under SASCE for fish preservation. He also thanked not only the Fisheries Department but also the fish farmers and traders who will benefit from this development. He highlighted that fish is highly perishable and, without proper preservation, spoils quickly, causing significant losses. Therefore, this cold storage facility will serve as an important and valuable asset for fish farmers and traders, helping them improve their livelihoods.
The Minister also outlined several government initiatives aimed at improving fish rearing and distribution in the state. He mentioned that, across districts, the department is working to train fish farmers, enhance fish production, and increase the availability of larger and better-quality fish. He added that the department aims to ensure that the people of Mizoram have access to fresher and more abundant fish supplies.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Aizawl South-II MLA Pu Lalchhuanthanga, who attended as a special guest. He expressed appreciation for the Fisheries Department’s efforts in strengthening the fish supply system within his constituency. The event was chaired by Er. Lalrothanga, Secretary of the Fisheries Department, while Director Pi Laltleipuii presented a report detailing the construction of the cold storage facility. The Cold Storage facility has been built under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure (SASCE) 2020–2021 as part of the Integrated Fishery and Agro-based Processing Unit component, with the Horticulture Department serving as the nodal agency. The project was sanctioned at a cost of ₹123 lakhs.
The facility includes two cold chambers with a total fish storage capacity of approximately 16 tonnes. The building has been designed to ensure hygienic, efficient, and proper fish preservation. In addition, approach roads and the surrounding areas have been improved to ensure better accessibility and usability.
