SIMS Performs Fifth Successful Laparoscopic Surgery for Hydatid Cyst

Laparoscopy Proven Safe Even for Major Surgeries; Patient Recovers Quickly

Raipur, Nov 2025 :The Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Bilaspur, has achieved another major milestone in the field of complex surgeries. The surgical team successfully removed a 10-centimetre hydatid cyst from the liver using a laparoscopic (keyhole) technique. This marks the fifth successful laparoscopic surgery of this kind performed at SIMS.

Doctors Opt for Laparoscopic Procedure After Assessing the Severity

Twenty-year-old Teejan Netam from Mungeli came to SIMS with complaints of abdominal heaviness, loss of appetite, and discomfort. Ultrasound and CT scan revealed a large hydatid cyst in the right lobe of her liver. Considering the seriousness of the case, the doctors, under the guidance of SIMS administration, decided to operate using the minimally invasive laparoscopic method.

Laparoscopy Ensures Faster Recovery and Minimal Blood Loss

The surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr. O.P. Raj, Head of the Surgery Department, along with Dr. Raghuraj Singh, Dr. B.D. Tiwari, and Dr. Priyanka Maheshwar. From the Anaesthesia Department, Dr. Madhumita Murti, Dr. Bhavana Raizada, Dr. Milton, Dr. Mayank Agre, and PG residents played a crucial role. Radiology Head Dr. Archana Singh provided accurate reporting, contributing significantly to the procedure. OT staff members Sister Yogeshwari, Santosh Pandey, and Ashwani Mishra also played commendable roles.

Thanks to laparoscopic technology, the incision was very small, bleeding was almost negligible, and the patient is expected to return to her routine life much sooner.

What Is a Hydatid Cyst?

A hydatid cyst is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus (dog tapeworm). It commonly affects the liver and lungs. The infection spreads through contaminated water, infected food, or contact with dogs and sheep.

Main symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Heaviness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling full quickly

Deep or large cysts may affect liver function and, if ruptured, can lead to a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis. Preventive measures include consuming clean water and hygienic food, as well as taking deworming medicines under the National Deworming Programme.
