GenZ Protests in Nepal Caused 77 Deaths and NPR 84.45 Billion in Losses, Government Report Reveals

Kathmandu, Dec 2025 : Nepal suffered a devastating toll during the GenZ protests in early September, with 77 lives lost and damages to public and private property estimated at NPR 84.45 billion, according to a government-appointed committee.

The committee, tasked with assessing the destruction caused during the protests on September 8 and 9 and preparing a plan for the reconstruction of public infrastructure, submitted its findings to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday.

The report from the committee, headed by National Planning Commission Secretary Ravilal Pantha, confirms that 20 people died on September 8, followed by 37 on September 9, and an additional 20 in the subsequent days, bringing the total death toll to 77. The violence escalated on September 9 after the killing of GenZ protesters the previous day, leading to widespread destruction of both public and private property.

A total of 2,429 people sustained injuries during the nationwide unrest. Of these, 17 were below 13 years of age, while 1,433 were between 13 and 28 years old. The protests affected 54 of the country’s 77 districts and 262 local levels, ultimately contributing to the fall of the KP Sharma Oli-led government and paving the way for the current administration under Prime Minister Karki.

Physical infrastructure suffered extensive losses. Government property worth NPR 44.93 billion was destroyed, while private sector losses are estimated at NPR 33.54 billion. Several key government buildings, including those within Singha Durbar, Nepal’s main administrative complex, were torched. In addition, major commercial establishments such as Bhatbhateni Departmental Store, Hotel Hilton Kathmandu, Hyatt Regency Kathmandu, and the Chaudhary Group’s warehouse, owned by Nepal’s sole billionaire Binod Chaudhary, were heavily damaged in arson attacks.

Overall, 2,671 buildings were damaged, with losses totaling NPR 39.31 billion. Additionally, 12,659 vehicles were destroyed, causing further losses of NPR 12.93 billion. Community and other sectors reported damages worth NPR 5.97 billion. Among the government-related losses, 68 percent pertain to the federal level, while provincial and local governments accounted for 10 percent and 22 percent of the damage, respectively.

The committee’s report provides a comprehensive picture of the scale of devastation during the GenZ protests and will guide the government in planning reconstruction and compensation efforts to restore affected communities and infrastructure.
