ICAR-CIFRI Conducts 3-Day Training on Sustainable Wetland Fisheries in Assam.

ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), in collaboration with the Fishery Department and ARIAS Society, Government of Assam, successfully organised a three-day residential training programme on “Sustainable Utilisation of Wetland Fisheries”  from 10th to 12th December 2025 at its Regional Centre, Guwahati. The programme was part of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded SWIFT (Sustainable Wetlands and Integrated Fisheries Transformation) Project.

The training was conducted under the guidance and supervision of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI; Mr. G. S. Das, Director of Fisheries, Assam; Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati and Dr. R. C. Barman, Joint Director, Fishery Department, Assam. It was coordinated by Dr. P. Das and Dr. S. C. S. Das, Senior Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI, along with Mr. R. Pegu of ARIAS Society. A total of 40 officials, including 12 women officers, attended the programme.

The inaugural session on 10th December was graced by Chief Guest Proffessor Niranjan Kalita, Vice Chancellor, Assam Veterinary and Fishery University. In his address, he emphasised the critical need for scientific and sustainable management of Assam’s wetlands. Dr. B. K. Das, addressing the gathering online, highlighted the importance of integrated approaches and capacity-building for effective wetland fisheries development.

During these 03 days, participants were briefed on wetland fisheries management protocols, cage and pen culture, fish seed rearing, macrophyte control, soil and water parameters, fish health, environmental monitoring, participatory governance, post-harvest practices, and fish marketing.

The valedictory session today – 12th December featured Chief Guest Dr. Probodh Borah, Director of Research (Veterinary), Assam Agricultural University, who urged participants to apply their learning for successful implementation of the SWIFT project. Certificates were distributed to all trainees, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. S. C. S. Das.
