Rajya Sabha Plunges into Chaos as J.P. Nadda Raises Slogans Issue at Congress Rally
New Delhi, Dec 2025 : The Rajya Sabha witnessed a stormy session on Monday as routine proceedings gave way to uproar after Leader of the House J.P. Nadda highlighted controversial slogans shouted during a Congress rally at Ramlila Maidan.
The day began calmly with the usual parliamentary business, including laying of papers and presentation of reports by ministers. However, tensions escalated when Nadda stood to raise the issue of slogans reportedly chanted by Congress workers on Sunday in the national capital, including “Modi Teri Kabar Khudegi, Aaj Nahi to Kal Khudegi” (“Modi, your grave will be dug, if not today, then tomorrow”).
Speaking with visible concern, Nadda described the slogans as reflective of the Congress party’s mindset and a sign of frustration stemming from dynastic politics. He emphasised that wishing for the Prime Minister’s death was “highly reprehensible” and represented an unprecedented lowering of political discourse in the country.
Demanding a formal apology from Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, who was present in the House, Nadda’s remarks immediately triggered protests from opposition benches. Members raised slogans, shouted across the chamber, and created such pandemonium that normal proceedings came to a standstill. The treasury benches sought to defend the statement and condemn the actions of the Congress workers, while opposition members resisted, resulting in prolonged chaos in the Upper House.
In the midst of the disorder, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh adjourned the House till noon to restore order.
Prior to the uproar, the House had assembled at 11 a.m. and proceeded with routine legislative business. Among the key items, Pankaj Chaudhary placed the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report for the year ending March 2023 on the table, covering compliance audit observations of the Union Government under Section 19A of the CAG Act.
Prakash Chik Baraik and Baburam Nishad presented the final action taken statements on recommendations from the tenth report of the Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, associated with Demands for Grants for 2024-25.
K. Laxman tabled the 34th report of the Committee on Public Accounts regarding irregular grant of incentives and allowances in the Ministry of Science and Technology, along with the 35th report on action taken regarding the National Social Assistance Programme under the Ministry of Rural Development.
Satish Chandra Dubey also made statements on the implementation status of recommendations from the second and fifth reports of the Standing Committee on Coal, Mines, and Steel, linked to Demands for Grants for 2024-25 and 2025-26 under the Ministry of Mines.
Additionally, Suresh Gopi presented the status of implementation of recommendations from the 379th report of the Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture, related to the Ministry of Tourism.
The session highlighted the volatility of parliamentary debates, showing how routine business can quickly be disrupted when contentious political issues are raised. While the official business of the day covered important audit and committee reports, the Rajya Sabha’s proceedings were largely overshadowed by the uproar over the slogans, reflecting the deep political tensions between the ruling party and the opposition in the current Parliament.
