CM Stalin Inaugurates ₹56.36 Crore Porunai Museum, Showcasing Tamil Civilizational Legacy

Tirunelveli, Dec 2025 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, currently on a two-day tour of the district, inaugurated the Porunai Museum on Saturday—an ambitious cultural and archaeological landmark dedicated to showcasing artifacts discovered from excavations at Adichanallur, Sivagalai, and Korkai. Speaking through a video message, Stalin emphasized that the museum marks a major milestone in documenting the deep-rooted heritage of the Tamil civilization. He reiterated his long-standing belief that the history of the Indian subcontinent should be written from the cultural foundation of Tamil soil.

Highlighting the archaeological work done across the region, the Chief Minister recalled the significant excavations and the establishment of the museum at Keezhadi near Madurai, noting that the Porunai Museum—constructed at a cost of ₹56.36 crore—is the next major step in preserving and presenting Tamil Nadu’s civilizational legacy.

Stalin explained that archaeological evidence from the Porunai (Tamirabarani) river basin reveals a continuous cultural timeline from ancient times to the Iron Age. Excavations at sites such as Adichanallur and Sivagalai in Thoothukudi district have uncovered burial grounds and residential remains believed to date back to the Iron Age. He said, “Excavations conducted by the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department along the banks of the Porunai River have yielded a wealth of artifacts, including bronze, gold, copper, and iron objects. Scientific dating has confirmed that the iron objects found in Sivagalai indicate that the region possessed iron smelting technology in ancient times.”

Stalin further noted that the Porunai Museum brings these findings to life as promised by the state government. “The museum features exhibits illustrating the evolution of iron smelting techniques, a 5D tour through Tamil landscapes, visual representations of traditional games, documentary presentations on archaeological history, and a digital feedback center,” he said. He added that the institution is intended not only to educate the present generation but also to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate Tamil Nadu’s extraordinary civilizational achievements.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister participated in the Christmas Peruvizha 2025 organised by the Christian Nallenna Iyakkam. Extending Christmas greetings to Christians across Tamil Nadu, Stalin said he arrived after signing a government order granting minority educational institutions the authority to appoint teachers. During the event, he also approved the renovation of a church in Kadaladi, Ramanathapuram district, at a cost of ₹1.45 crore and sanctioned the appointment of 470 teachers in minority schools.

The celebration was attended by leaders from Christian, Muslim, and Ayya Vazhi communities, including Speaker M. Appavu, Ministers Geetha Jeevan and Mano Thangaraj, Tirunelveli MP C. Robert Bruce, and Iyakkam President Inigo Irudayaraj.

Upon arriving in Tirunelveli, Stalin held a roadshow in KTC Nagar, drawing thousands of enthusiastic residents who lined the streets to welcome him.
