India Emerges as Global Electronics Manufacturing Powerhouse: Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi, Dec 2025: India has recorded a six-fold increase in electronics production over the past decade and has emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturing nation, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday, underscoring the country’s rapid transformation into a global manufacturing hub.

In a series of posts on social media platform X, the minister highlighted that India’s electronics exports have grown eight times over the last 11 years, a surge largely attributed to consistent policy support and targeted government interventions such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

Vaishnaw said the PLI scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing has played a pivotal role in strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity. The scheme has attracted investments exceeding Rs 13,475 crore and enabled electronics production worth nearly Rs 9.8 lakh crore. This expansion, he noted, has significantly boosted manufacturing output, job creation and exports.

“Over 1.3 lakh jobs have been created in the last five years alone,” the minister said, adding that electronics has now become India’s third-largest export category. “From being seventh earlier, electronics exports have climbed rapidly, reflecting the success of our manufacturing push.”

Initially, India’s focus was largely on assembling finished electronic products. However, Vaishnaw said policy emphasis has now shifted towards building a robust component ecosystem. The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme has supported capacity creation across modules, components, sub-assemblies, raw materials and even the machinery required for production.

According to the minister, the scheme has received 249 applications involving proposed investments of Rs 1.15 lakh crore. These projects are expected to generate production worth Rs 10.34 lakh crore and create nearly 1.42 lakh jobs. He described this as the highest-ever investment commitment in India’s electronics sector, reflecting strong industry confidence in the country’s manufacturing potential.

Vaishnaw also highlighted steady progress in the semiconductor sector. He said ten semiconductor units have already been approved, with three facilities currently in pilot or early-stage production. In the near future, semiconductor fabrication units and assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) facilities in India will begin supplying chips to domestic and global electronics manufacturers.

“Electronics manufacturing has generated nearly 25 lakh jobs over the past decade. This is real, grassroots-level economic growth,” the minister said. As India scales up semiconductor and component manufacturing, he added, employment generation is set to accelerate further.

From finished products to components, rising exports, growing global confidence and increasing competitiveness of Indian companies, Vaishnaw said the sector exemplifies the tangible impact of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
