Mohanlal’s Mother Shantakumari Amma Passes Away at 90 in Kochi

Kochi, Dec 2025 : Shantakumari Amma, the mother of Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal, passed away at her residence in Kochi on Tuesday. She was 90 and had been confined to bed for nearly a decade due to age-related ailments, family sources said.

Doctors who arrived at the residence later confirmed that she had breathed her last peacefully. Mohanlal and his immediate family were in Kochi at the time of her passing.

Her death marks a deeply personal and emotional loss for the veteran actor, who was known to share an exceptionally close bond with his mother. Despite a demanding career that spans decades and frequent travel across India and abroad, Mohanlal consistently ensured that her care and comfort were never compromised. Those close to the family recall that he remained personally involved in her wellbeing, often rearranging professional commitments to be by her side.

Born into a traditional household, Shantakumari Amma largely remained away from the public eye even as her son rose to become one of the most celebrated and influential actors in Indian cinema. Family friends describe her as a quiet yet strong presence—deeply rooted in simplicity, discipline, and devotion—values that Mohanlal has often credited for shaping his outlook on life.

Over the years, Mohanlal has endured several personal losses. His father, Viswanathan Nair, and his brother passed away earlier, making his mother’s demise particularly poignant. Colleagues say Shantakumari Amma was his emotional anchor, a source of strength who helped him stay grounded amid the pressures and glare of stardom.

Condolences poured in soon after the news broke, with members of the film fraternity, cultural figures, and political leaders expressing their grief and solidarity with the actor and his family. Many recalled Mohanlal’s frequent references to his mother in interviews, where he spoke about her unwavering support and moral guidance.

With a career spanning more than four decades and over 350 films across multiple languages, Mohanlal has often said that his mother’s presence gave him the balance needed to navigate fame, success, and criticism. Her influence, he noted in earlier interactions, helped him remain rooted despite a life lived in the public gaze.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be held in Kochi, with close family members in attendance.
