Kohli–Rohit Felicitation Steals the Show During Historic First ODI at Kotambi Stadium

Vadodara, Jan 2026 : Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were at the heart of a light-hearted and unforgettable moment during India’s first ODI against New Zealand at the Kotambi Stadium on Sunday, as cricketing action briefly gave way to an unusual mid-innings tribute. Marking the stadium’s maiden men’s 50-over international, the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) chose a creative and humorous way to honour two of India’s most iconic ODI batters, leaving fans amused and delighted.

The felicitation stood out not merely for its intent but for its execution. During the innings break, organisers placed a cupboard near the boundary rope, decorated with life-size images of Kohli and Rohit on its doors. As the crowd watched curiously, the doors were opened when the players’ names were announced — and to everyone’s surprise, Kohli and Rohit themselves emerged from inside the cupboard. The unexpected reveal sparked laughter across the stands and instantly became a talking point among spectators.

The ceremony was attended by ICC president Jay Shah and BCCI chief Mithun Manhas, who presented bouquets to Kohli and Rohit as a mark of respect for their immense contributions to Indian cricket, particularly in the ODI format. Both players appeared thoroughly entertained by the novelty of the tribute, smiling and laughing as they acknowledged the cheers from the packed stadium.

Fans were quick to react on social media, with many joking that the felicitation resembled an “unboxing ceremony” for India’s batting legends. The playful moment resonated widely, adding a sense of warmth and celebration to an already historic occasion. For Kohli and Rohit — veterans of countless high-pressure international matches — the quirky tribute offered a rare, relaxed moment in front of a home crowd.

The significance of the event was amplified by the setting. Kotambi Stadium was hosting its first-ever men’s ODI, and nearly 35,000 spectators turned up to witness the landmark fixture. With international matches being rare in cities like Vadodara, the organisers appeared keen to make the occasion memorable, blending cricket with entertainment while celebrating two players who have shaped India’s ODI success over the last 15 years.

On the field, India won the toss and elected to bowl first. New Zealand began steadily, with Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls putting together a strong century-plus opening partnership that put the hosts on the back foot early. India, however, staged a disciplined comeback with the ball, striking at regular intervals to restrict the visitors to 300/8 in their 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell anchored the New Zealand innings with a composed knock, ensuring his side posted a competitive total on a sluggish surface.

As cricket resumed after the laughter-filled break, the moment remained etched in fans’ memories — a fitting blend of celebration, creativity and cricketing history.
