Farmers of Four Villages Benefit from Irrigation from Parshurampur Reservoir

Parshurampur Reservoir – Surajpur / January 2026 Farmers in four villages are reaping significant benefits from irrigation facilities provided by the Parshurampur Reservoir Project in the district. Constructed in 2006, the reservoir currently serves hundreds of farmers from nearby villages, enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting local livelihoods.

Situated at latitude 23°06’40’’ N and longitude 82°48’15’’ E, the dam has a total length of 12.60 meters and a maximum height of 20.70 meters. The crest width measures 6 meters, while its total water storage capacity is 9.452 million cubic meters.

The designed irrigation capacity of the reservoir covers 809 hectares during the Kharif season and 441 hectares during Rabi, totaling 1,250 hectares. The main canal extends 5 kilometers, supplemented by five branch canals totaling 4.9 kilometers.

Extensive Benefits to Farmers

Farmers from Parshurampur, Jagannathpur, Surta, and Akshaypur are currently availing of irrigation water from the reservoir. Presently, the dam holds approximately 5.75 million cubic meters of water, sufficient to support ongoing cultivation.

During 2025, actual irrigation in the Kharif season was carried out over 630 hectares, while the Rabi season target was set at 170 hectares. In the current Rabi season, 131 farmers have cultivated crops, including 50 from Parshurampur, 35 from Surta, 30 from Akshaypur, and 16 from Jagannathpur.

Support Through Seed Distribution

Under the Seed Village Scheme, the Agriculture Department provided 29 quintals of wheat seeds and 1 quintal of mustard seeds to local farmers this year.

Currently, 35 hectares in Parshurampur are under cultivation with various crops, including 20 hectares of wheat, 2 hectares of mustard, 1 hectare of chickpeas, and fields of peas.

Farmers Highlight Positive Impact

Local farmers report that the reservoir has ensured timely irrigation, which has significantly increased crop yield and improved their economic condition. They consider the Parshurampur Reservoir Project a milestone in the agricultural development of the region, contributing to sustainable growth and livelihood security for farming communities.
