GHMC Collects 88 Tonnes of E-Waste in Two-Day Special Drive Across Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Jan 2026 : In a significant step towards environmentally responsible waste management, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) collected a total of 88 tonnes of electronic waste during a two-day special e-waste collection drive that concluded on Tuesday. The initiative aimed not only at systematic disposal of e-waste but also at spreading public awareness about its harmful environmental and health impacts.

According to GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan, the drive was carried out across 531 designated collection locations in the city with the support of 191 dedicated vehicles. On the first day, e-waste collection camps were organised at 271 locations across GHMC limits. A total of 95 vehicles were deployed, resulting in the collection of 47 tonnes of electronic waste. The second day saw the drive being conducted at 260 locations, where 96 vehicles were used to collect an additional 41 tonnes of e-waste.

Commissioner Karnan personally visited several e-waste collection centres to review the arrangements and ensure that the collected material was handled and disposed of in a scientific and environmentally safe manner. Officials confirmed that all the electronic waste gathered during the drive was transported to authorised processing units for proper recycling and disposal, in compliance with environmental norms.

The special drive placed strong emphasis on public awareness, highlighting the dangers of improper disposal of electronic waste, which contains hazardous materials that can contaminate soil and water if not treated correctly. Appreciating the public response, the GHMC Commissioner thanked the citizens of Hyderabad for their responsible participation and also lauded the dedicated efforts of officers and field staff who ensured the smooth execution of the drive.

In view of requests received from several residents to extend the e-waste collection initiative, Commissioner Karnan said that arrangements would be made for the regular collection of electronic waste from across the city. He added that necessary communication would be issued to inform the public about the modalities of ongoing e-waste collection.

Meanwhile, GHMC continued its intensive special sanitation drive for the 13th consecutive day on Tuesday. Over the last 13 days, a total of 4,864 tonnes of waste has been transported. The sanitation drive covered all 3,034 identified locations, including garbage-vulnerable points, foot overbridges, flyovers and parks across the 300 wards of the city.

So far, the drive has resulted in the removal of an additional 3,609 tonnes of municipal waste and 1,255 tonnes of construction debris. Both the e-waste and sanitation drives were closely monitored at the field level by Zonal Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to ensure effective implementation.
