Voting Underway in Maharashtra’s 29 Municipal Corporations, BMC Polls Take Center Stage

Mumbai, Jan 15: Voting for elections to 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra began on Thursday morning, with citizens turning out in large numbers across the state, including Mumbai, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Kolhapur, and Nagpur. First-time voters, senior citizens, and families were seen at polling stations, eager to exercise their democratic right. Voting started at 7:30 a.m., with long queues observed at booths such as the Pali-Chimbai Municipal School in Mumbai, reflecting heightened public interest in the civic polls.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) remains the focal point of the state-wide elections. This year’s contest for India’s richest municipal body is expected to be tightly fought between the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the reunited Uddhav-Raj Thackeray coalition. The elections are being held after a long gap, with 2,869 seats across 893 wards up for grabs. Around 34.8 million voters across the state will decide the fate of 15,931 candidates. In Mumbai alone, 1,700 candidates are vying for 227 BMC seats, with an annual budget of over ₹74,000 crore at stake. This is the first BMC election following the 2022 Shiv Sena split, making the political battle even more significant. The campaign has been marked by alliance realignments, accusations, and high-stakes populist promises.
