Champhai Mock Drill Successfully Conducted
Champhai, January 2026: Like other districts of Mizoram, a mock drill was conducted in Champhai today. The exercise was held in the afternoon at Chhur Hmun, Bethel Veng, following the morning drill.
The mock drill was organised as a preparedness exercise to train response mechanisms in the event of a disaster. In this drill, an earthquake scenario was simulated at 4:45 pm. As soon as the earthquake scenario was triggered, the siren was sounded, and all concerned officials immediately assembled at the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) located at the Circuit House.

Champhai Deputy Commissioner Pu Mohammad Aaquib, who acted as the Responsible Officer, received the situation report and briefed the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). A staging area was identified, from where Search & Rescue teams and Medical teams were assigned their responsibilities and deployed immediately.
At the simulated disaster site, the scenario involved two fatalities and ten injured persons. Various response teams managed the situation, rescued those who could be saved at the site, and transported the injured to the hospital for treatment.
The Incident Commander for the overall mock drill was Additional Deputy Commissioner Pu James Lalnithanga. At the incident site, P&E SDO Pu P.C. Lalrawnliana served as the Incident Commander, while PHE SDO Pu C. Zothansanga acted as the Observer.
The mock drill was completed smoothly, with all participating teams successfully carrying out their assigned roles. A debriefing session was held at the DEOC at 6:00 pm, during which the observers, incident commanders, and various teams shared their actions, observations, feedback, shortcomings, and areas requiring improvement.
Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Chairman Pu Mohammad Aaquib expressed appreciation for the effective performance of all departments and teams involved. He emphasised the need to clearly identify areas requiring improvement and called for better clarity in roles, responsibilities, and coordination, particularly in addressing gaps in procedures and time management.
Following the district-level debriefing, a State-Level Debriefing was conducted at 6:45 pm via video conference, in which members of the Champhai DDMA participated.
