National Agriculture Development Scheme Transforms Farmer’s Life

Vegetable cultivation helps farmer Dadu Ram Manhar become self-reliant

Raipur, January 2026 : The main objective of this project is to ensure soil and water conservation while enabling farmers to earn higher returns from a single unit. Water harvesting tanks are used not only for irrigation but also to promote fisheries and poultry units, creating additional sources of income for farmers. With the support of the Horticulture Department and the National Agriculture Development Scheme, farmer Shri Dadu Ram Manhar, a resident of village Karauwadih in Jaijaipur block of Janjgir district, moved beyond traditional farming and adopted vegetable cultivation, achieving remarkable success. His achievement has become a source of inspiration for other farmers in the region.

Economic hardship due to traditional paddy cultivation

For many years, Shri Manhar depended on traditional paddy farming. However, rising input costs and comparatively low returns led to financial difficulties. During this period, officials from the Horticulture Department informed him about advanced vegetable production techniques and various government schemes, encouraging him to explore alternative farming options.

Beginning of brinjal cultivation using advanced techniques

Motivated by the guidance of the Horticulture Department, Shri Manhar started advanced brinjal cultivation using mulching technology on 0.400 hectares of land. For this initiative, he also received a subsidy assistance of ₹10,000 from the department. By adopting scientific farming methods, the crop began yielding produce within just two months.

Better yield and impressive income

From brinjal cultivation, Shri Manhar obtained a total production of 90 quintals, earning a gross income of ₹2.85 lakh. The total cost of cultivation was ₹1.25 lakh, and after deducting expenses, he earned a net profit of ₹1.60 lakh. The quality of the produce was so superior that, in addition to the local market, traders from Odisha also arrived to purchase the crop.

Continuous increase in income through crop diversification

After continuous brinjal production from April to September, Shri Manhar cultivated bottle gourd in October, further strengthening his income. Subsequently, by planting cucumber, he diversified his crops and developed new sources of income, ensuring sustained financial growth.

Support from the Horticulture Department and government schemes

Today, Shri Dadu Ram Manhar has established vegetable cultivation as a stable and profitable source of income. Crediting his success to the Horticulture Department and government schemes, he stated that these initiatives have helped him become economically strong and self-reliant.
