The ministers will meet with the Nordic defence ministers at NATO headquarters later today.

Last week, the Danish and Greenlandic governments, together with a number of NATO allies, decided to increase military presence and exercise activity in the Arctic and the North Atlantic. Because the security situation is constantly evolving and tensions have spread to the Arctic.

This requires strong cooperation in both the political and military areas, as well as across NATO countries. There is broad support in NATO circles for a further strengthened presence and NATO role in the Arctic. The two ministers will discuss this with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at a meeting today.

“The Danish and Greenlandic governments, together with a number of NATO allies, have decided to increase the military presence and exercise activity in the Arctic and the North Atlantic. A number of allies are already contributing, and we are meeting broad support for NATO to do more in the Arctic. Vivian Motzfeldt and I will discuss this with NATO’s Secretary General, Mark Rutte. And it will also be the focus of the discussion with the Nordic defence ministers later today”, says Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen.

“Greenland is in an extraordinary situation that has the attention of the whole world. The situation requires that we strengthen cooperation on defence and security in the Arctic broadly within the NATO circle. I look forward to discussing the way forward with NATO’s Secretary General and with my Nordic colleagues in Brussels”, says Naalakkersuisoq’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Research, Vivian Motzfeldt.

In close cooperation with both Greenland and the Faroe Islands, Denmark has in 2025 entered into two partial agreements on the Arctic and the North Atlantic under the defence agreement.

In addition, Denmark has invested in a wide range of other capabilities and initiatives that are also relevant to the Danish Armed Forces’ task performance in the Arctic. This means that more than 88 billion kroner has been invested in capabilities and initiatives that can strengthen defence and security in the Arctic.
