Tourism Department Holds Meeting with Council of Churches in Mizoram

Aizawl, January 2026: A meeting was held today at 1:00 pm at the SAD Conference Hall II, MINECO, Aizawl, between officials of the Tourism Department and representatives of the Council of Churches in Mizoram (CCM) to discuss issues related to the growing tourism sector in Mizoram. The meeting was chaired by Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, Minister of State, Tourism Department.

Addressing the gathering, Tourism Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar highlighted the sharp rise in tourist arrivals to Mizoram in recent months. He noted that from September up to the Sairang Festival, and subsequently in October, the number of visitors to the state crossed one lakh. He said Mizoram has been witnessing a significant increase in tourist inflow, which is expected to rise further, and the Tourism Department is taking proactive steps to prepare for this growth. At the same time, he emphasized that increased tourism inevitably has an impact on the state. Tourists visit to experience the beauty, culture, and peaceful environment of Mizoram, and therefore it is important to carefully consider how the state receives and manages a growing number of visitors.

The Minister explained that many tourists arrive without prior knowledge of local customs, traditions, and ways of life. Since tourism affects society as a whole, he stressed the need for close coordination with churches, community leaders, and civil society organizations to ensure responsible tourism. He stated that by December alone, excluding three districts, Mizoram recorded more than 1.1 lakh tourists, most of whom arrived during peak holiday seasons. He added that this period is likely to remain a high-tourist season in the future as well. In view of this, the government plans to intensify sensitisation and awareness programmes among the public. He underlined the importance of citizens understanding not only how to welcome tourists but also what is appropriate and acceptable conduct.

The Minister further pointed out that churches are among the most frequently visited places by tourists. Therefore, it is important to clearly communicate guidelines regarding conduct, dress code, and behaviour within church premises, as well as defining the extent to which visitors may participate. He said these matters require careful discussion and coordinated planning with the Council of Churches in Mizoram.

Representatives of the Council of Churches in Mizoram welcomed the increase in tourism and acknowledged that the growing number of visitors also has implications for the churches. They expressed the need for thoughtful consideration and appropriate steps from the church’s perspective.

The meeting was described as an initial interaction and exchange of views. It was decided that further detailed discussions would be held in future to explore practical measures and collaborative initiatives. The CCM also agreed to hold internal consultations and share their views and proposals in subsequent meetings.

The meeting was attended by Rev. Dr. R. Lalbiakliana, President of the Council of Churches in Mizoram, along with other representatives. From the Tourism Department, Joint Secretary Pi Lalsangpuii Hmar, Director Pi R. Lalrodingi, and other officials were also present.
