Meerut, January 2026 : The Major Dhyan Chand Sports University, under construction in the Sardhana area of Meerut, will become a medium for setting new benchmarks across western Uttar Pradesh as well as the entire state.
On Thursday, during an interaction with the media, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath shared in detail the progress, objectives, and future roadmap of sports infrastructure, sports culture and the state’s first Sports University being built in Meerut.
CM Yogi said, “The construction of the state’s first Sports University in Meerut in the name of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand is a matter of pride for Uttar Pradesh”.
He informed that the selection of Meerut for this project is evident, the university’s logo, flag and uniform have already been launched. He added, “In the near future, this Sports University will provide guidance to youth as a new platform and will set new standards in sports activities.”
Chief Minister Yogi also added that the construction work of the university is underway in the Sardhana area along the banks of the Ganga canal over an area of 90 acres, and with an additional 10 acres of land, the total area is being expanded to 100 acres. This project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the first phase, an amount of Rs 250 crore has been approved by the government, and this work will be completed by March. For the second phase, new projects worth more than Rs 200 crore have been proposed, and the target is to complete all works of Phase 1 and Phase 2 by 31 May 2026.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that this university, built in the name of Major Dhyan Chand, will help take India’s sports potential to the global platform in line with the vision of Prime Minister Modi. In accordance with a Viksit Bharat, sports and physical education curricula here will also be of the same standard.
According to Chief Minister Yogi, the academic session of the Sports University has already begun in August 2025. At present, the classes are being conducted at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Agricultural University, Meerut.
From the new academic session, the university will shift to its own campus. Here, along with regular sports, a total of 12 sports, including six traditional sports, will be covered, diploma, degree and post graduation courses will be conducted. Along with this, research programmes related to sports will also be started.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “The government’s effort is to develop this institution as a world-class Sports University. Targets have already been set for the university to achieve this goal”.
He directed that high-quality faculty should be appointed here and former players should be associated as coaches, so that experience and practicality are integrated into training.
The Sports University will be developed as a centre for nurturing a new sports culture. In western Uttar Pradesh, boys and girls have a special inclination towards sports, and many Olympians from this region have won medals for the country. Considering this talent, the government has taken several steps to promote sports culture in the state.
The Chief Minister said, “Meerut has been the land of revolution, and this district provided leadership to the nation during the freedom movement. Under the One District One Product scheme, sports items have been designated as the district product for Meerut.”
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that the government has already initiated efforts to establish a sports college in every division, with the proposed sports university functioning as the central hub. He also announced that the state government will extend support to private sports academies dedicated to promoting sports across Uttar Pradesh.
