High-Level Meet in Delhi to Boost Shrimp Production and Fisheries Development

New Delhi, January 2026: A high-level meeting was held in New Delhi with the objective of transforming India’s fisheries sector and significantly increasing shrimp production. The meeting was chaired by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh). Maharashtra’s Minister for Fisheries and Ports Development Nitesh Rane participated in the meeting and presented a detailed overview of fisheries development in Maharashtra, along with the key challenges faced by shrimp farmers in the state.

The discussions primarily focused on various legal and technical aspects related to the import of SPF shrimp broodstock, post-larvae (PPL), and live feed. Emphasis was laid on ensuring sustainable growth in shrimp production while strictly adhering to biosecurity norms. The meeting also deliberated on simplifying import procedures and identifying measures required to position India’s fisheries sector competitively at the global level.

Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel was also present at the meeting. Senior officials from the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, representatives from ICAR institutes, and officials from MPEDA and the Coastal Aquaculture Authority (CAA) attended the discussions. Stakeholders from shrimp farming, hatcheries, exports, and aquaculture feed sectors actively participated and shared their perspectives on achieving sustainable growth in the fisheries sector.
