England Crush Pakistan by 103 Runs to Win Headingley Test Inside Three Days

Headingley, Aug 2026 : England produced a dominant performance at Headingley to defeat Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the opening Test of the series, wrapping up a comprehensive victory inside three days and strengthening their position in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.

Pakistan's batting collapsed for just 135 in their second innings after being dismissed for 171 in their first, leaving England with a commanding victory. England's pace attack once again proved too strong for the visitors, with Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson combining to claim nine wickets in the second innings.

Robinson was the standout performer throughout the match, finishing with impressive figures of 8/80 and earning the Player of the Match award for his decisive contribution with the ball.

Pakistan began their second innings facing a daunting deficit after England had established a massive 238-run first-innings lead. Their problems returned almost immediately when Archer struck in his opening over, dismissing Imam-ul-Haq and putting Pakistan under early pressure.

Shan Masood attempted to counterattack by finding the boundary regularly, but England's bowlers maintained a relentless line and length. Abdullah Shafique soon departed after edging a defensive stroke, leaving Pakistan in deeper trouble before the lunch interval.

The collapse accelerated after the break when Tongue ripped through the Pakistani middle order. Saud Shakeel was his first victim before the England seamer dismissed both Masood and Salman Agha in the same over, effectively ending Pakistan's hopes of mounting a recovery.

Mohammad Rizwan provided the only significant resistance, scoring 41 runs as wickets continued to fall around him. However, Robinson kept finding breakthroughs at the other end, ensuring that Pakistan never threatened to build a substantial partnership.

Gus Atkinson eventually ended Rizwan's resistance, before Archer completed the innings by removing the final batter in the 38th over.

Pakistan's struggles had begun in their first innings when they were bowled out for 171 after being asked to bat first. Robinson and Tongue shared the wickets, claiming five each, with Robinson finishing with 5/51 and Tongue returning figures of 5/46.

England responded with a commanding batting display. Four of their middle-order batters made half-centuries, with Jordan Cox scoring 73, Joe Root contributing 66, Harry Brook making 91 and Dan Lawrence adding 51.

Their collective effort enabled England to build a huge first-innings total and establish a 238-run advantage. Pakistan's Ali Usman was the most successful bowler for the visitors, taking five wickets for 95 runs, but England's batting depth ensured that his effort could not prevent the hosts from taking control.

Archer also made a useful contribution with the bat during England's first innings, helping the hosts extend their advantage beyond the 200-run mark on the third morning. England eventually ended their innings after Jamie Smith was dismissed for 25.

The victory marks an impressive start to Joe Root's second stint as England's full-time Test captain. The emphatic result also provides England with valuable points in the World Test Championship standings as they look to strengthen their position during the 2025-27 cycle.

For Pakistan, the defeat compounds their difficulties in the championship table. Their points percentage has fallen to 19.05, leaving them at the bottom of the standings after being overtaken by the West Indies.

England will now look to carry their momentum into the second Test, while Pakistan will need to address their serious batting shortcomings before the next encounter.

The second Test between the two sides will be played at Lord's from August 27, with Pakistan facing an early opportunity to respond and level the series.
