India’s Women Face Semi-Final Hurdle After 0-2 Defeat to Netherlands in Hockey World Cup

Amstelveen, Aug 2026 : India's women's hockey team suffered a major setback in their bid to reach the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after defending champions Netherlands defeated them 2-0 in their opening second-stage Pool E match at the Wagener Stadium here on Friday.

The Netherlands dominated large portions of the contest and secured victory through goals from Yibbi Jansen in the second minute and Frederique Matla in the 38th minute.

The defeat leaves India with one point in Pool E, carried forward from their draw against China in the first stage. The Netherlands, meanwhile, moved to six points after adding three to the three points they brought forward.

China have two points after drawing with Australia earlier in the day, while Australia are also on one point, leaving India with a difficult task in their final pool match.

The Netherlands wasted little time asserting their authority. Just 81 seconds into the match, their intense full-court press resulted in an early penalty corner. Jansen stepped up and produced a powerful strike that beat goalkeeper Bichu Devi to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Dutch continued to apply pressure, but Bichu kept India within touching distance. She produced an excellent left-hand save from another penalty corner in the fifth minute before making another important intervention to deny Freeke Moes.

India gradually settled into the contest and made their first circle entry in the ninth minute. Salima Tete registered India's first shot three minutes later, but her attempt sailed over the post.

The Netherlands came close to doubling their advantage in the 13th minute when another penalty-corner attempt struck the post. India survived the scare and ended the opening quarter just one goal behind.

Savita took over in goal at the start of the second quarter and immediately found herself under pressure.

India earned their first penalty corner in the 19th minute, but Deepika's flick was blocked after hitting the foot of the charging defender. The retake was subsequently stopped by a Dutch stick.

Navneet Kaur came close to equalising in the 22nd minute after receiving a pass inside the circle, but her effort went narrowly over the crossbar.

At the other end, Savita produced a series of crucial saves. She denied Felice Albers before making another important intervention during a goalmouth scramble, ensuring the Netherlands did not extend their lead before half-time.

The Dutch increased the intensity after the interval. India defended bravely, with Salima making an important block from a penalty corner in the 33rd minute.

India then created an opportunity on the counterattack, but Sunelita's effort from inside the circle lacked the power required to trouble the Dutch goalkeeper.

The Netherlands eventually found their second goal in the 38th minute. After earning another penalty corner, Matla's effort found a way through the Indian defence and past the player stationed on the post to make it 2-0.

India entered the final quarter needing an early breakthrough, but the defending champions continued to control the tempo.

Moes struck the post in the 54th minute, while Savita remained alert to keep out another Dutch attack shortly afterwards.

India pushed forward during the closing stages in search of a goal. Navneet came closest in the 59th minute, but Dutch goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal produced a brave save, taking a blow to her helmet in the process.

The Netherlands earned one final penalty corner in the dying seconds, but Ishika made an important save on the post to prevent a third goal.

The defending champions comfortably managed the remaining moments to secure a 2-0 victory and strengthen their position in the semi-final race.

India now face a must-win situation against Australia in their final Pool E match. To keep their semi-final hopes alive, India will need to defeat Australia and also hope that the Netherlands beat China, opening the door for the Indian team to progress on the basis of the final standings.
