Gautam Adani Welcomes US Court Decision Dismissing Criminal Charges

Washington/New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has welcomed a US court’s decision to dismiss criminal charges against him, his nephew Sagar Adani and associate Vneet Jaain, describing the ruling with “humility and deep respect for the judicial process”.

US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the Eastern District of New York on Monday dismissed with prejudice the criminal charges against the three executives in connection with allegations of securities and wire fraud. The dismissal with prejudice means the same charges cannot be brought against them again.

Reacting to the decision, Gautam Adani said the group had maintained its faith in the legal system throughout the proceedings.

“Throughout this challenging period, our faith in truth, fairness and the rule of law remained unwavering,” Adani said in a post on X.

He also expressed gratitude to those who continued to support the group during the legal proceedings.

“My deepest gratitude to those who never lost faith in us, in the system and in India’s capacity for justice,” he said.

Adani added that the group would remain focused on its business and its broader national commitments.

“We will continue doing what matters: building for our nation, creating value that outlasts us and serving a purpose larger than ourselves. That is our commitment,” he said.

Separately, the court finalised a settlement between the Adanis and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), bringing the civil securities fraud proceedings against them to a conclusion. Under the settlement, the Adanis will pay $18 million to the US government.

The criminal and civil proceedings were separate legal matters. While Monday’s court decision ended the criminal charges against Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, the SEC proceedings were resolved through the settlement.

The developments follow a detailed submission by the US Department of Justice last month in which it argued that investors had not suffered financial losses in the securities at the centre of the case. The department said the absence of investor losses further weakened the government’s criminal prosecution and supported its decision to seek dismissal of the charges.

In its filing before the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, the Justice Department identified the lack of financial harm to investors as one of the key weaknesses in the securities fraud case.

“Not a single penny has ever been lost on the securities at issue,” the filing stated. The department further said that two of the notes involved in the case had been fully repaid, while the remaining two were current on payments, with no indication of an imminent change.

The case had drawn significant international attention because of Adani’s position as one of India’s leading industrialists and the involvement of renewable energy projects.

The Adani Group and the accused executives had denied wrongdoing and contested the allegations.

The latest court action brings a major phase of the US legal proceedings to an end for Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, allowing the group to shift its focus back to its business operations and expansion plans.
