Chief Minister flags in four successful mountaineering expeditions of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering
Dehradun, Sept 2026 : Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday flagged in four successful mountaineering expeditions conducted by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, at the Chief Minister’s Camp Office.
The expeditions included a joint Mount Aconcagua expedition conducted by NIM in collaboration with the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Pahalgam.
Congratulating all the mountaineers on their successful expeditions, Dhami praised their courage, discipline, technical expertise and team spirit in challenging high-altitude conditions. He said their achievements would inspire young people in Uttarakhand and across the country to take up adventure activities.
The Chief Minister said NIM has established an important identity in the fields of mountaineering, adventure sports, youth development and high-altitude training. The institute not only provides advanced training in mountaineering and adventure activities but also helps develop courage, leadership, discipline and the ability to face difficult circumstances among young people.
The joint NIM-JIM&WS expedition to Mount Aconcagua, Argentina, which stands at 6,961 metres, was led by Colonel Hem Chandra Singh. The six-member expedition team successfully reached the summit of Mount Aconcagua on February 22, 2026. The expedition had earlier been flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh from South Block in New Delhi.
The NIM Nun-Kun Expedition 2026 was led by the institute’s Principal, Colonel S.S. Rajpurohit. The expedition team successfully climbed the 7,077-metre Mount Kun on August 15, 2026. Achieving the feat on Independence Day made the accomplishment particularly significant for the team.
Continuing the expedition, the team successfully scaled Mount Delta-41, standing at 5,908 metres, on August 26. It then achieved another major milestone by reaching the summit of Mount Nun, at an altitude of 7,135 metres, on August 31.
With these achievements, the expedition team successfully climbed three peaks of the Nun-Kun mountain range during a single expedition, marking a significant accomplishment in the field of mountaineering.
Dhami congratulated all members of the expeditions and said Uttarakhand’s geographical conditions offer immense potential for mountaineering and adventure tourism. He said achievements by mountaineers not only encourage young people to participate in adventure sports but also strengthen Uttarakhand’s identity at the national and international levels.
He emphasised the importance of developing adventure tourism while ensuring safety, discipline and professional training. The state’s Himalayan terrain, he said, provides considerable opportunities for promoting mountaineering and related activities.
Special Principal Secretary, Sports and Youth Welfare, Amit Kumar Sinha; NIM Principal Colonel S.S. Rajpurohit; JIM&WS Principal Colonel Hem Chandra Singh; Captain G. Santosh Kumar; officials of NIM; and members of various mountaineering expeditions were present on the occasion.
