New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Namibia produced a sensational performance to defeat South Africa by 18 runs in the opening match of the Tri-nation T20I series at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on Friday. Defending a total of 163 for nine, Namibia bowled out the Proteas’ challenge at 145 for nine to register a memorable victory.
The result gives Namibia a 2-0 advantage over South Africa in their head-to-head T20I meetings. Pacer Ruben Trumpelmann and JJ Smit were the chief architects of the victory, claiming three wickets each and keeping their composure during crucial stages of the South African chase.
After winning the toss, South African captain Bjorn Fortuin opted to field first, but his bowlers struggled to exploit the conditions as Namibia’s opening pair of Louren Steenkamp and Jan Frylinck provided an excellent start. The duo added 84 runs in 9.4 overs, putting the hosts in a strong position.
Steenkamp scored 41 before Fortuin finally ended the opening partnership. Frylinck, however, continued to attack the South African bowling and brought up an impressive 60. Namibia subsequently lost wickets at regular intervals and were unable to establish another substantial partnership.
Despite the setbacks, captain Gerhard Erasmus contributed 19, while Alexander Busing-Volschenk made 13 and Trumpelmann added 12. Their efforts ensured Namibia reached 163 for nine from their allotted 20 overs, setting South Africa a challenging target of 164.
South Africa’s chase got off to a poor start as both openers were dismissed inside the first four overs. Jordan Hermann was removed for seven, while Lhuan-dre Pretorius departed after scoring nine, leaving the Proteas under early pressure.
Dewald Brevis then produced a fighting innings to keep South Africa in the contest. His aggressive 75 gave the visitors hope of completing a difficult chase, but wickets continued to fall around him. When South Africa slipped to 86 for five, Duan Jansen joined Brevis at the crease.
The pair responded with a valuable 47-run partnership, bringing South Africa within 31 runs of victory with 13 deliveries remaining. Namibia, however, produced the decisive moment when Trumpelmann dismissed Brevis, leaving the Proteas’ lower order with a difficult task.
Erasmus then delivered an outstanding final over, conceding only three runs while also dismissing South African captain Fortuin. Namibia consequently moved firmly into control of the contest.
Jansen, unbeaten on 25, briefly revived South Africa’s hopes by striking eight runs from the first two balls of the final over. However, Smit held his nerve, bowled the remaining deliveries accurately and removed the final South African batsman to seal Namibia’s victory.
Brevis was comfortably South Africa’s leading scorer with 75, while Jansen’s unbeaten 25 and Rubin Hermann’s 12 were the only other double-digit contributions.
Namibia’s disciplined bowling and crucial wickets at key moments ultimately proved decisive, denying South Africa what had appeared to be a possible late comeback.
The Proteas will now look to bounce back when they face Zimbabwe in their next match on Saturday, while Namibia will carry the confidence of their impressive opening victory into the remainder of the tri-nation series.
