Showcased at the International Trade Show
Yogi Government’s initiative set to add more ‘sweetness’ to sugarcane cultivation; four new varieties capable of yielding up to 100 tonnes per hectare
Greater Noida, September 2026 : Four newly developed and improved sugarcane varieties have been showcased at the stall of the Sugar Industry and Cane Development Department at the International Trade Show. Developed by the Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research (UPCSR), these varieties aim to enhance sugarcane productivity and sugar recovery in the state, increase farmers’ income, and reduce the impact of red rot disease. With these efforts by the Yogi Government, sugarcane cultivation in Uttar Pradesh is expected to become more productive and profitable.
The varieties on display at the Trade Show are Co.Sha. 19231, Co.Sha. 18231, Co.Sha. 13235, and Co.Sha. 17231. These varieties have a yield potential of approximately 90 to 100 tonnes per hectare.
A key feature of these improved varieties is their resistance or tolerance to red rot, one of the most serious diseases affecting sugarcane. They also exhibit strong germination and vigorous early growth. In addition, the higher number of millable canes in these varieties is expected to contribute to increased sugarcane productivity as well as higher sugar production.
Another important advantage of these varieties is their strong ratoon crop potential. Better ratoon performance can help farmers reduce cultivation costs for subsequent crops while maintaining good yields. The adoption of these improved varieties is expected to support farmers in achieving higher productivity and making sugarcane cultivation more profitable.
