Chicago, Aug 2026 : Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in Chicago and held a series of meetings with global business and technology leaders, highlighting India’s expanding economic opportunities, growing innovation ecosystem and potential to emerge as a major global hub for advanced technologies.
Addressing the Indian community at the Consulate General of India in Chicago, Sitharaman praised the diaspora for its contribution to strengthening India’s soft power, enhancing the country’s global standing and deepening bilateral relations between India and the United States.
She said the Indian diaspora remained an important bridge between the two countries and played a significant role in promoting economic, technological and cultural linkages.
During her interaction, Sitharaman also highlighted India’s potential beyond being a large consumer market. She said the country could develop into a global hub for the design, testing and manufacturing of autonomous defence systems by leveraging its strong technology capabilities, skilled workforce and rapidly expanding innovation ecosystem.
The Finance Minister separately met Mark S. Hoplamazian, President and CEO of Hyatt, in Chicago. Discussions focused on Hyatt’s long-term engagement with India and opportunities to expand its presence as the country’s tourism and hospitality industry enters a new phase of growth.
Sitharaman highlighted improvements in India’s connectivity and infrastructure, which are creating new opportunities across the tourism and commercial sectors. She noted that Tier-II and Tier-III cities were increasingly emerging as important centres of economic activity and travel.
She also pointed to the growing potential of destination-led tourism, covering spiritual, cultural, wellness, medical, nature and experiential travel. Sitharaman encouraged Hyatt to use its global expertise and asset-light business model to strengthen partnerships with Indian developers and investors.
The Finance Minister also suggested exploring opportunities for talent development through the National Institute of Hospitality. She further highlighted GIFT City as a potential financing and treasury hub for Hyatt as the company expands its operations in India.
Sitharaman also met Brandon Tseng, Co-founder and President of Shield AI, with discussions centred on the company’s engagement with India and opportunities to expand cooperation in AI-enabled autonomy, unmanned systems and next-generation defence technologies.
The discussions covered areas including research and development, technology development, co-development and co-production. Sitharaman welcomed Shield AI’s continued interest in India and highlighted the country’s expanding defence technology ecosystem, strong engineering and artificial intelligence talent, and growing advanced manufacturing capabilities.
In another meeting, Sitharaman held discussions with Monish Patolawala, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of ADM. The talks covered ADM’s long-standing presence in India and opportunities to deepen its engagement across agriculture, food, nutrition, technology and sustainable value chains.
The Finance Minister welcomed ADM’s investments in India, including its growing partnerships with farmers, engagement with Farmer Producer Organisations and development of global technology and AI capabilities in Bengaluru.
She highlighted opportunities to strengthen connections between ADM and Indian farmers while encouraging greater investment in regenerative and sustainable agriculture. Sitharaman also underlined India’s capabilities in food processing, innovation and emerging technologies as areas offering scope for deeper collaboration.
Her engagements in Chicago underscored the government’s focus on attracting investment, expanding global partnerships and positioning India as a destination for advanced manufacturing, technology, tourism and sustainable economic development.
Through interactions with the diaspora as well as leading global companies, Sitharaman emphasised India’s growing role in global value chains and its ambition to combine talent, technology and infrastructure to create new opportunities across sectors.
