Russian President says Modi consistently raises the need to end the war and supports dialogue and mutually acceptable solutions
Moscow, October 2026: Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to help bring an end to the Ukraine conflict, saying the Indian leader has “very good ideas” aimed at finding a peaceful and mutually acceptable solution.
Speaking at the annual Valdai International Discussion Club meeting, Putin said Modi has consistently raised the issue of ending the conflict despite the close and friendly relations between India and Russia. He said the Prime Minister has shown a strong interest in finding a peaceful way forward.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of those world leaders who, despite our very good and even friendly relations, personal good relations, constantly raises the question and asks the question about putting an end to the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin said.
Putin said Modi has been actively advocating solutions that could be acceptable to both sides. He described India’s position as neutral while emphasising that New Delhi remains interested in bringing the conflict to an end.
“He has an avid interest and very good ideas aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions. In that sense, naturally, the Prime Minister takes a neutral position but with an interest in the end of the conflict,” Putin said.
The Russian President also expressed gratitude to Modi for his continued engagement and his support for resolving the conflict through peaceful means.
“We are thankful for his desire to put an end to this conflict through peaceful means and as soon as possible,” Putin said.
Putin’s remarks come against the backdrop of India’s repeated calls for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. New Delhi has maintained that its approach is principled and humanitarian, while encouraging both sides to pursue a negotiated settlement.
In an interview with Japanese newspaper The Yomiuri Shimbun during his visit to Japan in August, Modi said India’s position on the conflict had been appreciated by both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“India has maintained a principled and humanitarian stance on the conflict which is equally appreciated by both President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” Modi said.
He said both leaders had spoken to him and shared their perspectives on developments related to the conflict. Modi added that he had reiterated India’s consistent position and encouraged dialogue and diplomacy as the means to resolve the crisis.
Responding to a question on India’s potential role in peace efforts, Modi said New Delhi was willing to support meaningful initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution.
“I have already indicated India’s willingness to support meaningful efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution of the conflict,” he said.
Modi also highlighted India’s relations with both Russia and Ukraine, saying these ties could help strengthen efforts aimed at achieving an early and lasting peace.
“I believe, by virtue of our good relations with both sides, including key stakeholders, we can strengthen efforts dedicated to the restoration of an early and lasting peace in Ukraine,” he said.
The latest remarks also underline the continuing engagement between the Indian and Russian leaderships. Modi and Putin most recently met in September on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
During that meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral economic and strategic cooperation, including the implementation of the Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030. Their discussions also covered infrastructure, energy, technology, defence and culture.
Putin’s public acknowledgment of Modi’s efforts places renewed attention on India’s stated approach of maintaining relations with both sides while supporting dialogue as the route towards a peaceful settlement.
