Chennai, Aug 2026 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to move a special resolution in the State Legislative Assembly on Monday seeking to make the rendering of Tamil Thai Vazhthu, the state invocation song, mandatory as the first ceremonial song at all government functions.
The move assumes political and cultural significance amid a continuing controversy over the rendition of Vande Mataram at certain official programmes attended by the Governor. The issue has triggered protests and sparked a wider political debate over ceremonial protocols at government events in the state.
Through the proposed resolution, the Vijay government seeks to establish a uniform protocol under which Tamil Thai Vazhthu would be accorded precedence at official functions organised by the state government and institutions under its administrative control.
The proposed protocol is expected to cover programmes held at government offices, educational institutions, public sector undertakings and other establishments functioning under the state government. Under the arrangement, Tamil Thai Vazhthu would be rendered at the beginning of such events, providing a clear and consistent order for ceremonial proceedings.
The move comes against the backdrop of disagreements over the protocol followed at functions attended by constitutional authorities, particularly the Governor. The rendition of Vande Mataram before Tamil Thai Vazhthu at some programmes has drawn objections from political parties and sections of the public, who have argued that the established convention regarding the state invocation should be respected.
The special resolution is expected to formally reaffirm the importance attached to Tamil Thai Vazhthu and remove ambiguity over the sequence in which ceremonial songs are to be rendered at government functions.
Members from various political parties are expected to participate in the Assembly debate and place their respective positions on the issue before the House considers the resolution for adoption.
The state government is likely to seek broad political consensus, considering the cultural significance of Tamil Thai Vazhthu and its importance in Tamil Nadu's public and official life.
If adopted unanimously, the resolution would signal collective support from the Assembly for giving Tamil Thai Vazhthu the first place in the ceremonial protocol at state government functions.
